What are your thoughts on great single player games with great stories such as bioshock, dead space, GTA, assassin's creed etc having mutliplayer?

Do you think the success of call of duty have contributed to this?

What makes the developer have such a need to include multiplayer in such great single player titles?

I'm sure the sales numbers from games like COD does have something to do with this. With more companies going to the, get a free code to play online with a new game, approach to preventing used game sales, they may also want to join multiplayer to do the same. I never once thought after playing thru bioshock.. this needs multiplayer. The MP for Assassins Creed sounds very fun tho.. and I can't wait for the Beta to open.

I love multiplayer so the more the merrier I say. I really enjoyed the mp aspect of GTAIV and RDR plus they still had a great single-player game to it so it was all good. I'm really looking forward to Dead Space 2 and the mp in it looks pretty interesting.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl are the two biggest examples I can think of.

i don't like it. I really think these games should just focus on being good single player games.

Bioshock and STALKER never needed to have multi-player, just to name a few... But I don't care if a game has multi-player or not, just as long as it doesn't hinder the single-player experience.

I'll judge Assassin's Creed when I play the beta. But Uncharted pulled it of nicely.

When it's decent, it can be nice to have it, but a game such as Bioshock definitely should not get points docked off for not having multiplayer.

Coincidentally, I wrote a blog on this subject that elaborates my thoughts a bit more thoroughly.

We are in a experimental stage of multiplayer right now, like a teenager experimenting with drugs. sometimes we'll love it and some times we'll throw up. We need all these multiplayer modes to work out what works and doesn't. Yes some are as entertaining as a fred youtube video, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't test how these games could work in a multiplayer space. re5 for example showed that co op in these games are really fun, but also showed the industry not to force in co op when no one else is there. Alot of games have paved the way by teaching us the positives and negatives of multiplayer gaming. If people didn't experiment with multiplayer then we wouldn't have half of the great multiplayer games we have now.

Some single player games can not handle multiplayer. Single player games that slow down times does not seam to have a good multiplayer

Pause power menu is also another game that can not handle multiplayer

The general public opinion seems to be that if it doesn't have online multiplayer, its not worth keeping. Its too bad to because the development of multiplayer usually detracts from the singleplayer.

The Darkness. One of the richest single player experiences of recent years really didn't need a half-baked multiplayer element slapped on to it. Oh, and let's include Condemned 2 while we're at it - that game's combat mechanics did not translate well to online competition.

I'm not going to make a list of games as I have already seen other people mention games in this thread i.e Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Stalker that come to my mind, but I will say this co-op over MP in nearly all cases...in my book at least.
