Yeah, well, like every kind of hobby, videogaming can reach the limits of addiction. On the other hand, it's not the pastime itself that is addictive, it's some of the games.
I Was Up At 5:00am And I Saw A News Report About Video Game Addiction. It Really Made Me Mad, Beacause Evr Since Manhunt 2 Got The AO Rating, All I Hear About Video Games Is Negative. Now They Might Make VIDEO GAME ADDICTION A Mental Illness. What Do U Think???uberpwner93
The fact that your up at 5:00 am tells me something about you. It's an addiction, if you die of a heart attack because you were playing WoW then you are addicted, luckly it isn't common in games like gta or mario or halo, but rpgs are usually where people get addicted. Quit acting like video games are the only good and has no problems they, like many things, have its negatives.
Yeah of course you can get addicted, but its only mental and not physical, so its simple enough to stop when you see that you have problems (assuming you can tell when that is!), whereas a addiction to e.g. smoking or alcohol is both physical and mental, in that you body craves the chemicals.
The only thing going cold turkey on video games might cause is a crave for fun, and that can be found in many more ways than in computer games.....
I have known a few videogame addicts in my time. Mainly with MMORPGs. There's something very interesting about those games that can really get a grip on people. I guess it's the mock-social life in a fantasy world. But it's a very real thing. Certainly it's not like heroin, but it exists.
As for me, I'm kind of like a videogame addict, except with alcohol instead of videogames.

Video Game Addiction is only a mental illness if it is something a person feels is the only thing to look forward to in life. I'm not saying a mere passion or hobbie, I'm saying someone who is literally obsessed with them to the point that this person feels the real world is not worth living, and lives in his or her own fantasies. Its fine to be creative, and to enjoy various forms of entertainment, with dreams of becoming a creator of a particular type of art(graphic design, writing, poetry, painting, sculpture, film directing, etc), but it becomes an issue when that person wants to be IN the art(Ex.; Wanting to be Master Cheif) instead of making it. The causes of this becoming a mental illness are neglect from their parents, lack of friends and/or human contact, and can sometimes lead or be linked to Misanthropy.

I do think that video games, especially ones with a societal aspect, like MMORPGs can be habit forming. That isn't to say that this is a negative thing. Food is addictive to some, as is sex -- neither are inherently bad things. They are just misused.
I saw their statement about the most likely candidates to form an additction were those that had trouble apart in real-world social situations. Normally, I'm the first to bash those that call out video games, but in this case, they seemed pretty right on, to me.

The issue is the confusion between obsession and addiction. Anyone who is actually ADDICTED to video games does have a problem. Most of the time what people call addiction is that the person just happens to have more fun playing video games than other things in their lives at the time. It is no different than someone who goes out and plays pool every evening. Now, if you go to some resort with white beaches and margaritas and all you can think about is video games and would rather be playing video games; yes you have a mental illness and you need help.
