Video game genres

Recently I was struggling to decide between Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed 2. At first, I thought I was going to get MW2 as a big fan of shooters. But then I thought of the two shooters I already have (ODST and Halo 3). This made me think of something. As a gamer, I feel that I should not focus myself on just one genre of games (that's why I got AC2). So now, my choice of games is not made by the specific genre; if it looks good, if people say its good, if I think it's gonna be good, or if I like that series of games (like Halo), I'm gonna get it. How do you guys choose your games? Do you get a specific genre?

If i like a game i get it, if there are multiple games out at once i want i choose one and wait for a price drop of the other(s). Pretty sure people don't mindlessly buy a game based on a genre, but based more on their opinions of that game.

If it's a good game, I don't care what genre it's in.

Although I really like FPS, I don't limit myself to that genre. If a game looks interesting to me, I'll buy it. Also, with the amount of demos on XBLA it's easy to test a game before I buy it. For the most part, I come on this website and see previews/reviews of games and see what people have said about the game and then purchase it myself.
