You can collect information the same way by reading a book. I don't think those are the reasons.

Call of Duty 1, Call of Duty United Offensive, Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty World att War, Medal of Honor Pacific Assault, Medal of Honor Airborne, Battlefield 1942 - you can lean much World War 2 facts from these 7 games, aswell as operations, dates, used weapons, the WW2 atmosphere, etc... Be carefull though, for not all the missions from COD, COD UO and MOH PA are real and the weapons from Battlefield 1942 are not the correct ones: The Americans used the M1 garand, the M1A1 carbine rifle, and the Springfield sniper - not no. 4 rifle and no. 4 sniper. The British used the lee Enfield and the Bren Gun - not the no. 4 rifle and the BAR. And the Russian most comonly used rifle was the Mosin-Nagant rifle and the most used submachine gun was the PPSH 42 - not the no.4 rifle and the Mp 18. Anyway, you can learn much from historic games - most oftenly strategy games (which are based on real historical events). Some people, on the other hand, just play and don't give a damn about the story and therefore can not learn anything. So games make you smarter, only if you allow them to. Also, I've read somewhere that people who play PC games (especialy FPS, RTS and RPG) usualy have higher IQ than the ones who don't and the ones who play Cars and Sports Games. PC games that make you smarter - a rare thing that's both fun and good for you :-)

Oh, and one more thing to. Video games can inspire you and make you interest, as well as investigate stuff like science, history, mythology etc...

I'll admit, it would be an epic win if I ever won a major award for knowing a bunch of answers I've learned from playing a videogame :P. Won't that be a buzzkill to my nation when they realize my "gift" is from doing absolutely nothing but sitting in front of my TV :D.

Or several books, if you feel so inclined. ;) As so many others, this topic confuses the ability to remember facts with being smart. Those two are not one and the same. A better topic title would have been "video games helped me pass a test".

Video games are base on problem solving. A group of enemies; a problem. You need to take in the information. Then, you get come up with a plan even if it as hasty plan and use the plan. If the plan failed , you need to change the plan.

Wouldn't really necessarily state that it makes you "smarter". Those questions were more about"recalling" information... which isn't really all that demanding in comparison to questions that require much more cognitative thinking. Such as: utulizing theories or ideas or concepts to help answer a question.

An example would be: What is socialism? It's a question that requires the ability to "recall" information.

Now, if the question asked: "What defining characteristics of socialism are beneficial for a small country in comparison to capitalism? Uuse world examples." This question would require a much more cognitive thinking to be able to understand the term and apply in a real world issue, give examples, and effectively argue your decision.

When I was asked "What is Schrodingers Theory" I knew it, because I had finished Oblivion. When I was asked " What is the theory of relativity" I knew it, because I had finished Pokemon. Aside from being sarcastic, you do learn from video games, but saying they make you smarter pushes it.

Not only smarter, but they can give you faster reaction time and help you think diffrently.

After playing some games on the PC I can block or dodge any weapon coming towards me.

Faster than a ninja! i'm a gaming ninja!

Yeah, I've learned quite a few things from video games. Like there's a 50-year-old Italian plumber who gets bigger by touching mushrooms.
