Quick note, this can be applied the movie industry as well.

A lot of the violent games out sometimes make me scratch my head. I'm talking about games with sensless violence. With games like Postal, Grand Theft Auto in general, and God of War you have to wonder sometimes. How could they come up with these games if they weren't troubled. I mean, going around a city, killing pedestirans, doing crimes, etc. A lot of the games also seem to glorify the murderer and criminal. To even come up with ideas one must be a closet psychopath. That, or maybe they just have some deep issues with anger, or they were bullied as children. Sometimes, I can just picture them coding the game going "gheheheshs yesssss code more death!". Honestly, what goes on through these developers heads when making over the top violent games? It's like, they lack empathy or some such man.

Now let me clear one thing up, this is NOT a discussion on video games causing people to be violent, no not at all. I'm talking about developers coming up with these ideas for games. Sometimes, its just so bizarre. I kind of wonder if they should see someone for all that pent up anger inside of them

He may not be totally wrong. Many musicians, film directors, artists, etc are disturbed people deep down. I'm sure there are some guys who make violent games that are the same way.

Yeah... because all developers get to choose exactly what game they work on. They decide everything about their games, after all. Not the designers, or the publishers, or the marketing department. Just the developers. And they're all **** crazy.

Violent games get made because violent games sell. The industry is a business.

Yes it does sell, makes you wonder about humanity and its double standards. Not only that, but the hypocrisy of it all.

There's nothing wrong with violence in games. If GTA didn't allow you to kill pedestrians it'd be stupid. When I shoot someone in a game I expect blood. Developers aren't disturbed purely because they showcase violence strongly.

You get enjoyment over that stuff? Sad that violent video games have to cure the cravings of our inner violent nature. Quite sad when you think about it.

You get enjoyment over that stuff? Gotta wonder about that. Even though it is fake, still... what is wrong with our species.

You sound like one of those do-gooders who do nothing but whine about something they feel is wrong. It's a game, if you don't like violent games, play something else.

I hope that you play all the violent games that you can. So that you don't do any of that stuff in reality since you must get out that hatred and inner violent behavior through video games. Its quite healthy actually, that you do it in video games so that it doesn't build up inside over time.

Oh, and I am a do-gooder that lifts.

That's pathetic. You think because I'm not turned away by pixelised violence, and expect realism when there is violence in games, that I have mental problems of something and have to vent out rage of some kind? Is that what you're implying?

Actually, yes. But most gamers may be that way. I mean, why does our species love violence so much? Its everywhere. I would like to hear your reasons.

What's wrong with doing these things in a video game?

What I personally find more disturbing is that one may apply to military service at the age of 16 and kill people in reality but he is supposedly not allowed to buy a violent video game that is rated 18+...

If you have such problem with violence, stop playing games that exhibit it. It's not real, stop whining.

Yep, there is a root. It's the evolutionary theory of survival of the fittest. Go back to the dawn of time and what will you probably find? One of our ancestors clubbing another to death over food, shelter or a mate. Games simply reflect that reality - if it's a comment on the sanity of developers, it's also a comment on every person that consumes games or any other form of violent media.

But what is important to remember is how advanced we still are. Instead of grabbing a club and going out to kill our neighbors, we can simply imagine them in our videogames as we pop their heads off with a sniper rifle. Catharsissm is one of humankind's greatest inventions.

No offense, but this is kind of a redneck preacher argument. I suggest you read something about catharsis, primal impulses and stress venting. A human male's primal instinct is to discharge his strength and show superiority over other males, and since we live in a society which tries to repress this primordial trait, we have come up with alterantive ways to do this, such as violent videogames. Beating up pedestrians in GTA is a cathartic activity for some: it makes them feel empowered and dominant though the release of endorphines in their brains. We are animals after all. As for 'sick': the treshold of 'sick' varies greatly from individual to individual: I can walk past a chainsawed corpse in Gears of War and think nothing of it, but to my neighbor that scene is from hell.

I actually agree with every bit of this. Well done, it makes sense actually. Society has repressed our basic primordial traits in general and that is why violence surrounds us, everywhere. We all love violence, deep down. It's our animalistic nature.

Violence in games is a great stress reliever. There's few things in gaming that are as fun as going on a rampage in a GTA game. I'm obviously not going to do those things in real life so I do them in games. Saying the developers responsible for those games are disturbed is ridiculous. I'd say they're mature and more willing to take risks.

True, but as Mr black stated above, if we didn't have video games at all to do that in, would you do even a minute of those things in reality? Violence is embedded in our DNA after all.

not really, its bothering me that publishers are targeting violent games at spoilt kids is even more disturbing...

Just because kids play violent games doesn't mean they are spoiled. I played GTA3 when I was 4. I'm sure as hell not spoiled, and I turned out just fine FYI. In fact your entire statement makes absolutely no sense. I do not see the connection.

Good grief. That game came out in 2001 so you must be a kid, even now. You have no opinion on games, you aren't old enough.

I've seen some of your posts on this site about games, and it's clearly obvious you play violent video games. Do you have some kind of rage you need to let out with video games like the rest of us problomatic people? You seem pretty delusional with your opinions.

YosemiteSam400

That's pretentious zealots for you

I'm more civilized than most people.

Pfft.. answer this then. Why do YOU play violent games?

I kind of wonder if they should see someone for all that pent up anger inside of them

your no better than the politicians who try and put bills against violent video games . Games are art ! Are to gonna go up to Michelangelo and censor his paintings ? Live your life if you don't like violence stick to Mario kart

Actually Michelangelo was censored:
