Today's Virtual Console update is something we've all been waiting for - some games that were never released outside Japan ever before.
Mario's Super Picross is Nintendo's second Picross game, and was never released outside of Japan due to poor sales of the Game Boy original. The basics of the game is the same as the recent Picross DS - best described as a "picture crossword" - and features two main level-based modes. Mario's levels have a countdown timer, when the clocks hit zero it's game over. Also, penalties are given for making mistakes. Wario's levels are the opposite - you aren't limited on time and there's no penalty for mistakes - the difficulty is gained because the game doesn't inform you of amy mistakes you make.
Mario's Super Picross is available for 900 Wii Points and contains some Japanese text. The game does not support 50Hz.
Two remakes of Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels have been released, but the original form has remained in Japan until now. The Lost Levels was known as Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan, and the game was deemed too difficult for the western audience (Nintendo altered Doki Doki Panic into a Mario game for the western version of Super Mario Bros. 2). The remakes were easier than the original, so it's about time for us to see how hard it really is.
Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels is available for 600 Wii Points and will only be available during September. The game does not support 50Hz.
Also on the virtual console is Neutopia II, a TurboGrafx game with gameplay heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda. It is available for 600 Wii Points

Turbo CD Games Hit VC in October
Another system will be joining the expanding Virtual Console lineup later this year. Hudson announced today plans to begin distributing ****c Turbo Grafx CD and Turbo Duo titles on the platform starting this October. Titles will eventually reach all major territories, including Japan, North America, Europe and Australia.
Hudson plans on releasing more than five titles from the two platforms to the Virtual Console in 2007. 2008 will see more than ten titles. Japan's Impress Watch game site reports that the action-RPG Ys Book I & II and the shooter Chou Aniki will be among the games available for the service.
The company plans on charging a bit extra for the new content. Titles for both platforms will cost 800 Wii Points.
In case you weren't around during the 16-bit era, the TurboGrafx CD and and TurboDuo were two CD-ROM platforms from NEC. The original TurboGrafx CD-ROM peripheral gave NEC's TurboGrafx cartridge platform the ability to play CD-based games. The TurboDuo was an all-in-one update to this format, with greater buffer space for caching game data.
While the platforms failed to see much success in the western world, gamers in Japan made these first CD-ROM consoles a success.
