Does anyone think that the next consoles (in 4 to 5 years) will be virtual reality? where you put something on and you see the world from the inside as opposed to on a tv screen. Virtual reality graphics right now are a hair away from looking life like, they use it to train military personell for just about anything from parachuting to shooting tanks and planes. I think this would be awesome although personally i dont think that it will be out for the next 8 to 10 years or so. But my guess is that someone is working on it right now. would you guys enjoy this too or am i alone on this one?

i hate to spoil your fun but as much as i'd like to do some vr missions i'm sure the militaries gaming machine costs a butt load of money and it would take a sweet while to miniaturize for home use. but then again what do i know? if you cant wait that long, i'm sure you can get your hands on nintendo's virtual boy that they released in the mid-nineties. i always wanted one but i was broke then.

Like ems said, I highly doubt VR gaming in the essence of what you're thinking is close to being affordable. Sony wanted to charge $700 for the PS3!

Oh yeah, I actually still have my Virtual Boy. Its nothing like whats been discussed here, however, it does give you the illusion of spectating the game "within" the games world as your peripheral vision is completely cutoff and all you see is the game environment. When I stop to think about it now, the view you get playing Mario Tennis and the actually feeling of being inside the structures in Red Alarm as you're flying through, the face-to-face feeling towards your opponent in Teleroboxer...it was kinda cool.

Gaming already went through a VR craze back in the mid 90's when 3D graphics just started to come out. You could go to malls and they would have these VR stations set up. They were pretty cool. You also had the virtual boy and the Tiger R-zone (though its debatable how much of a VR system that was. More like an eyepatch rather than a helmet).

wasnt it so flawed that most people, playing them for over 1 hour had a headache?

anyways, i'd say games are for fun, not realism. must ask.. arent the VRs just for watching the game? not playing?

because if so, then whats the point? we can buy television screens bigger than the eyesight.

Well, we dont even have CGI yet. We also have not hit cartoon style graphics too much, cell shading while nice is still not upto par with a cartoon.

Maby it could be this gen, but so far it has not, as for CGI? I think thats a long way off. You know how much it costs to run the Star Gate Atlantis cities graphics? Over 30000 bucks...

As impossible as it might seem, all I can say is that I hope virtual reality games exist before I'm too old. I think it would be one of the most amazing experiences ever, and it would just be plain cool.

Well Im sure VR gaming will eventually happen....but for the next wave of consoles in 6-7 years?....I doubt it....maybe the start of VR games will begin in the next-NEXT wave of consoles...PS5,Xbox 4,Wii 3.

Ya know though there was some kind of helmet thing that youwould put on your eyes that was around during the Dreamcast days....it wasn't specificly made for games(I dont think so) but you could use it for games....on the product's web-site they said you could use it for Dreamcast games....but this thing was like a $1000....plus it had warnings saying it could cause health problems if you wore glasses and various other health warnings.....the thing was just too ahead of its time.

I personally would love VR gaming....I hope its prefected and brought to market soon....Im sure someone out there is working on it.

I would predict virtual reality would be tried again in 10-15 years.

VR? Are you serious?

No one's ever even mentioned VR after the 90s...

And as for the Virtual Boy, here is a review by the AVGN:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyVAp0tOk5A&feature=channel_page

Even though his reviews are mainly for comedic purposes, he still actually reviews games and consoles.

The problem with VR is... those buggers you put over your head were heavy, unergonomic the screen was planar and its motion wasnt all that accurate, so you couldnt use it for an extensive period. They could try it once more using a very effective medium... ever heard of E Ink & Nanotube screens? they are light/bendable material (much like overhead projector film) capable of emitting a display. Being flexible they could probably be fixed in a revolved screen rather than a flat screen to give a more natural and panoramic experience.

I'd still prefer my gamepad and television screen, thank you very much :)
