Angry Joe is angry about Metro Last Light. He's right too. Why? Because one of the best features of the game, Ranger mode, which makes the game hardcore with no HUD and limited ammo and resources is locked as day one $5 or preorder DLC. Seriously, this sh*t needs to stop, they need to stop butchering games and selling each part separately.

Here's another game I will be getting used for 15 bucks instead of buying on day one.

What an idiotic idea! I was worried that DLC would come down to this kind of piecemeal nonsense, and now here it is. I won't buy a game that isn't a complete game out of the box. Don't be surprised if this becomes a standard practice when the next gen consoles get here.

Didn't they also do this with the first Metro? Still total bullcrap though, one would think they can't go any lower after selling whole endings as DLC but difficulty modes? I fear for what they'll rip out next as content for premium DLC.

There have been some pretty boneheaded DLC ventures this gen, but this has to be up there as one of the worst. All kinds of stupid. And it's probably going to get worse from here.

I have no problem with a company rewarding Day One buyers, because that's the opposite of how most companies have been behaving, which is penalizing those who buy Day One by witholding content that will be made available later and eventually included in the game when it drops in price.

Where this goes wrong is that it requires people preorder the game to get the Day One bonus, which is stupid, as many retailers don't offer preorders. They should have made it so the game came with it regardless of whether it was preordered or not, and made it so the code was only issued to those who bought on release day.

I think they locked out part of the single player, some underground area or something I can't remember and haven't played it. This is just ridiculous though.

Not exactly: yes Metro 2033 had a Ranger pack which added 2 difficulty modes, but that one came out months later, a proper expansion, people who didn't buy it wouldn't even know there was a hardcore difficulty setting. Here the Ranger pack is available on day one only for those who preorder or alternatively spend an extra $5

I did notice there were already a few DLC trophies listed in that game for completing those difficulties. Doesn't affect me, really, but I agree that it is complete BS. It's sad to see content taken away from games, especially single player games, and wrapped up as DLC or pre-order bonuses, which are just as annoying as DLC I think.

There are entire publishers I refuse to buy new products from, and it looks like Deep Silver is a candidate to join that list. EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Zenimax, Take Two, Warner Bros, Capcom, Sony CEA, Microsoft, and THQ are (or were, in THQ's case) currently on that list. Those are all "used or not at all", and sometimes I even have reservations about Square, Valve, Disney Interactive, and Namco.

Have to wonder if this was in the cards from the beginning (and if it was a decision from the developers or THQ) or if it was mandated by Deep Silver.

Selling a difficulty setting as a pre-order and optional feature is the worst idea for downloadable content I am currently aware of. Metro Last Light does not interest me as a day one purchase because of the atmosphere of the screenshots and now there is another reason to not buy it. I will purchase a game with all of its difficulties with the initial purchase and no less.

Saw this coming a mile away. People thought it was harmless buying DLC and supporting it, but they didn't see the big picture. Which is this right here folks. Its happening. Pretty soon, you will have to pay 4 bucks just to have the ability to run in video games.

Based on what? There have been DLC items that cost less than that on Live, PSN, and Steam.

Right sentiment but wrong argument. This isn't a DLC issue; it's a used game issue. It's Deep Silver's misguided attempt to mitigate losses from the eventual used game sales. This is basically the "online pass" strategy applied to single-player.

No.

Some DLC is worth the support. The expansion sets for Skyrim and Borderlands come to mind.

Hopefully people will learn about this and not support it.

The sippery slope argument is really getting old.

I mean really -- who in the right mind would ever make you pay for the most basic of functions in the name of DLC or an online pass? Seriously. It doesn't make any sense and it never will. This idea that the industry is out to get us is ridiculous. Yes, there have been some really abusive uses of DLC and the like, but come on. Ugh.

I'm contemplating cancelling my preorder because of this. While I don't want to buy a game with this kind of bullsh*t in it, on the other hand this kind of game is somewhat rare these days, being a singleplayer only survival horror game.

Damn shame they had to pull this crap, Metro Last Light was a game I was really looking forward to. Now, I'm not sure I'll even get it.

Asura's Wrath, Price of Persia 2008 and Castlevania Lords of Shadow offer the "real" ending as DLC though.

"Hey kids, that ending sucked right? So many unanswered questions, right? Don't you worry, for a mere $10 you can fight the real final boss and watch the real ending!"

Malpractice.

Actually, I think we're both talking about different aspects of the same issue. It's a DLC issue in that the additional feature has to purchased or unlocked online, even if it isn't literally downloadable content. DLC obviously can't be transferred with a used game disc, but the ultimate question here is, can you purchase DLC with a used game? I don't think there is a definitive answer to that question. What I don't like about the situation described in this thread is that purchasing the game doesn't entitle you to all of the game features. I just don't see myself ever buying a game that requires having to pay additional fees online to unlock all of the gameplay features.

I just see it being in the same vein as an online pass. If used games sales weren't as high as they are, you wouldn't see companies doing stuff like this, but they would still be releasing DLC. And I just think DLC gets a lot of bad press that it doesn't deserve. But it doesn't matter what category you or I lump it under - we both agree that what the publisher is doing here sucks. More than a few first day customers are gonna be quite irritated when they find out they're locked out of content just because they didn't pre-order. I pre-ordered last year, so I've definitely been paying attention to this game, but even I didn't hear about this promo until now.

I actually don't mind the idea of used-game purchases requiring to put the $5 down for Ranger mode, but there are a lot of day one customers that are gonna get hit with that extra fee because of the way they've set this up. That's just ridiculous.

I do not care if an extra mode is added to the game.

I am gettign tired of gamers whining. Anything that companies do there are gamers that go into full cry mode about it.

I want to preorder this and get it day 1 but I also don't want to support this sort of thing.. I'll pick it up used when it's cheap. The first game was awesome, but I don't want to support this sort of crap. Preorder bonuses are nice freebies, but when they take content out of the game like difficulty modes it's ridiculous.

This and Bioshock Infinite were going to be the only games I picked up for full price this year. But, with the announcement of DLC for Bioshock, and this kind of crap for Metro, I'll be waiting for them both to drop in price quite a bit before I pick them up. The game industry complains because they don't sell enough copies of a game quickly enough, but they institute policies that either penalize a day one buyer or just make it a more attractive option to wait for a complete edition.

I dont know what the big deal is. Just like with Metro 2033, the Ranger mode was THE DLC for the game. Ranger mode is a survival-based, hardcore mode. You can get that for free if you pre-order the game. This is what i did. Again, it was the same for 2033. So no surprise here.

Yeah, in general i am totally against the day-one DLCs. What changed my opinion on Metro Last Light's case is the fact that we can get it for free upon pre-order. If that wasn't the case i would not have considered it worth it.

Yeah, in general i am totally against the day-one DLCs. What changed my opinion on Metro Last Light's case is the fact that we can get it for free upon pre-order. If that wasn't the case i would not have considered it worth it.

Ok, but say you forgot to preorder or you didn't get the code or a bad code for whatever reason: hard mode would be locked for you on release day unless you pay 5 bucks, and that is unacceptable, at least for me. Keep in mind that a lot of people like to start the game on Ranger mode right away and i'm sure nowhere on the box will it say the mode is locked.

True. I am big fan of the series, but to be honest i never paid for the Ranger mode DLC for 2033. When i found out about the free upgrade to Limited Edition (which includes the Ranger mode on day one) i decided to pre-order Last Light - drove to my local GameStop and just paid for it.

I was tempted to preorder the game. This news clears every doubts i had and now i'm sure i will not buy the game at all. They do not deserve my money.

Just got a solid 9 from GameSpot. It seems it has a great and atmospheric storyline - and this is the deal maker/breaker for me. I cannot wait to play tomorrow!

I don't support these kinds of practices, so I won't be getting the game.  Simple as that, they lost a sale.

Metro 2033 was such a mediocre game. I don't understand how it even has a fan base.
