I read in a magazine that Goldeneye 007 for the N64 (1997) was actually the first FPS to feature the real-time use of a sniper rifle. It sounded awkward at first because I had never realised this, but I couldn't think of any shooter that preceded it that featured a sniper rifle. So can you guys confirm or debunk this?

GoldenEye set the tone for FPSs in several ways; I would suppose that sniper rifles constitute one of those ways.

It might be. It's the first game I remember using a sniper rifle in.

I remember using one in Syphon filter. I don't remember if that was before or after Goldeneye.

Team Fortress, in its original Quake-mod incarnation, predates Goldeneye.

No, technically the very first game was Silent Scope. A Arcade railshooter game where the controller was a sniper rifle model.

So you could actually make your character walk around AND shoot in the first person?

un when does a nes game or silent scope become fps,

the article clearly states 'first person shooter " doom being the very first first person shooter on the snes didnt have a sniper,

so yes goldeneye is definatelly the first first person shooter to have a sniper rifle,

and tf mods do not count sorry guys mods' are not full games you need tf2 to play them ,

so there for ,, it is goldeneye 007 turok was release shortly after ge i dont think that has a snipe ,, doom 64 definatelly does not nor does hexen , , -the only 3 weapons i know of in hexen are mele-the spiked thing , the wand like thing that shoots and the club ,

the secondary weapons are frost hand . ax and i think another hand type weapon

so yes goldeneye followed by quake/the world is not enough had sniper rifles on the n64 ,

and on ps1 syphon filter followed goldeneye was not released anytime before it ,

it is already confirmed that goldeneye was the first first person shooter on the n64 , and of that gen completely ,

as doom 64 was release slightly after ,

as was quake and hexen and dn64

Doom is not even close to being the first FPS. Its own developer, id Software, previously created Wolfenstein 3D. And although the latter was what defined the basic archetype for all FPS that would follow, what first established this genre was a 1974 game called "Maze War".

Well First Person Shooters indicated that you see it as the first person( the one holding the firearm) and a railshooter is often enough in First person so it is technically a First Person Shooter. Only difference really is that a railshooters decide where you go while the FPS today you decide where you move.
