Was Nights: Into Dreams somewhat overrated?

I was a Saturn owner as a kid, and without any true 3D Sonic game released for it at the time(no, Sonic 3D Blast doesn't count :P), I guess you could say it was a given that I wouldend uppicking up a copy of the heavily anticipated game featuring Sega's brand new mascot. At the time it was heavily praised by critics and gamers alike, going on to do pretty well for itself in terms of sales. At the same time tought, even back then, my initial feeling was that the gameplay really missed the mark, at least in regards to how it was described in advertisements.

The game was hyped as being the first of its kind, where you'd be able to fly "freely" in full "3D". Anyone who played the game though knows that this couldn't be further from the truth. Although the flying aspect of the game was indeed fun, you were anything but "free", as outside of the boss battles, you were essentially playing a very linear, on-rails game. On top of that, having restrictions such as a time limit in order to complete the obstacles, really took away from the opportunity to actuall ENJOY the experience.

Although it deservingly has the title of being a classic Sega game, I personally don't feel that it provided anywhere near the kind of fix that Saturn owners would've gotten had a true 3D Sonic game (Sonic Extreme) actually be released. In my opinion, it was a rather overrated game that merely provided a very original concept, but fell short in terms of what gamers were actually being offered by Sega.

Yeah, I remember feeling all this disappointment as well when it was released, pretty much as you describe it!

I remember the hype of a fully explorable 3D environment like Mario 64, and I remember the disappointment when it was released and turned out not to be anything like Mario 64 at all.

"Overrated" makes it sound quite harsh, because it is still an absolutely blast, and without a doubt one of the very finest games on the Saturn. But yes, there was a feeling of disappointment when it was released, after being promised a fully explorable environment and instead getting fixed routes and time limits.

I SOOOO agree that Nights Into Dreams was overrated. I heard so much about the game, and so much about how awesome it was. I ended up paying $30 for a used copy long after it was released. That was $30 down the drain, IMO. Now, I can't complain about the graphics. The game looks very bright and colorful, and it has fluidity to the visuals that a lot of Saturn games are lacking. But that's where my praise for it ends. The game is boring, childish, and repetitive. You fly. That's basically it. You fly, and fly, and fly some more while you collect these stupid little gem things. And if the timer runs out on your "fly power", you turn into a useless little kid while an alarm clock chases you around. And if that ridiculous alarm clock touches you, even once, Game Over. I continued playing it anyways to see if it got better, but it didn't. Even the bosses that you eventually get to are ridiculously easy to defeat, and look just as childish as the rest of the game.

in my opinion its a fantastic game, but its not the best game on the Saturn, like many people say.

I personally think burning rangers is better, another Sonic team game.

In terms of visual achievements,it definitely deserves full marks. In my opinion it was not only one of the best looking games on the Saturn, but of that era in general. The fluidity of Night's movements, as well as the very responsive controls (with the custom control pad that was released with it at least) were also big pluses about the game. Once again, I also applaud Sonic Team for creating a game that was so innovative and unique in terms of style and gameplay. At the same time though, I would most definitely be lying if I said I wasn't extremely disappointed with the game's lack of true adventure aspect. I was definitely expecting something very different, to say the least...

It's a unique experience, but not what some people made it out to be. I got the import version about a year ago and didn't see what all the fuss was about. Shining Force III, on the other hand, is the reason to own a Saturn.

I didn't follow the hype train or knew anything about the game before I played it. I just saw the commercial and knew I wanted to play it lol. I had a good time with Nights and the music especially was memorable to me.

I think panzer dragoon zwei is also pretty overrated. In fact, i'd say almost every 3D saturn game has aged poorly

I found it to be a much funner overall experience actually, and was almost like Sega's response to Starfox. The Saturn also had some pretty good 3D games, believe it or not:

Burning rangers

Virtual On

Virtual Fighter 2

Resident Evil

Tomb Raider

Of course, it also suffered from absolute abominations, like Die Hard Arcade. Just too bad that Sonic Extreme was never actually completed...

here are some 3D saturn games which are still very fun. Burning Rangers Bulk Slash Panzer Dragoon Saga Dead Or Alive Fighters Megamix Grandia (2D characters in a 3D enviroment) Winter Heat I could list more, but the fact is , that while some 3D saturn games have not aged well (although I dont see how a game can "age" , if it was fun then , its fun now), alot of them are still very playable.

I consider grandia a 2D game, in fact JRPG's don't usually age badly

Fighters megamix on the other hand aged very poorly in my opinion

Grandia is not a 2D game, if it has a 3D enviroment, and 3D objects, its a 3D game. and fighters megamix is actually very fun in my opinion.

I agree that NiGHTS is pretty overrated. The gameplay is pretty simplistic and the timer often makes it frustrating. The hype just came from the game being a 3D game and one of the few that took full advantage of the Saturn's analog controller. Now that all of those things have since become standard there's nothing to make NiGHTS stand out.

well, it blew me away, but my previous system was a SNES so I was easily impressed.
