There's no denying that GTA3 made them who they are today but I'd like to think that they were a good company before the release of GTA3. They had games like Midnight Club, Max Payne, and Smuggler's Run in which I enjoyed playing them.
Yeah GTA3 certainly made them a household name. The only game of theirs I played before that was GTA2. Max Payne came out the same year but I remember playing that a while after GTA3. I'll never forget seeing GTA3 in action for the first time at a friends house and being gob smacked. :)SilverSignal
yeah, i remember seeing it at an internet/gaming cafe ... I couldn't believe what i was seeing, brilliant feeling
Companies / developers don't start off being successful. Companies take time to gain reputation and success, it doesn't happen overnight. It doesn't matter if Rockstar weren't successful before GTA 3, it's the present that matters and at the moment they are one of the best developers out there.
well they were succesful in making good games, i highly suggest people that enjoyu old school agmes pick up the first 2 gta games and mabey that one that was in between 1 and 2, i remmeber it being english but dont rememebr the name
they were very funney and arcade like, plausyou had to juggle aroundmob respect, sort of like mercs but with mobsters
Rockstar was founded only three years prior to the release of Grand Theft Auto III, so naturally Rockstar's rise is inherently intertwined with the success of Grand Theft Auto III (even though GTA 2 was a successful release as well, just not nearly as big as its sequel). However, it was only after Vice City that Rockstar began to establish the identity it nurtures today - they dropped all third-party publishing and focused on internal development of mostly mature-themed games. L.A. Noire is actually the first Rockstar-published game since 2002 that wasn't developed by a Rockstar studio - although Rockstar was significantly involved in L.A. Noire's development.
Well, obviously. But as others have already pointed out, they weren't new when GTA3 was released.Companies / developers don't start off being successful. .... is so damn stupid.
wow we know they are one of the best developers but he asked a specific question if they were good before gta3. how about we never mention or ask questions about anything thats ever happened in the past, seeing as it doesnt matter. n all

Before GTA 3, they were called DMA Design

dma design office tour rare

Some folks seem to be confusing Rockstar Games with Rockstar North. Rockstar Games was only founded a couple of years before the release of 'GTA3'. Rockstar North was once known as DMA Designs (and founded in 1988), before being purchased by Rockstar Games in 2001.
[QUOTE="Mau-Justice"]They weren't even called Rockstar back then. They were DMA Designs, just some programmers working for Take 2. That answers your question right there.ImBananasHey, you have a FAMAS in your sig. Anyway, after seeing all of this I'm getting a little confused, but it's starting to add up. DMA Designs made GTA, then after or before the sequel, they became Rockstar North, then Rockstar Games bought them out. Do I have it right?
This is how it went down.
DMA Design was founded in 1988. They made a lot of Amiga and PC games most notably Lemmings. They were noticed by Sam and Dan Houser (who then worked for BMG) when they pitched a game called Race 'n Chase. The Housers were impressed with the game and signed it immediately - and renamed it Grand Theft Auto. The Housers moved from London to New York and founded Rockstar Games in 1998 (under Take-Two). Take-Two purchased DMA Design in 1999. It was renamed Rockstar North in 2002.
