Hey thought it would be an interseting topic to bring up. How do all of you guys feel about it when japanese devs make Western style games???? I personally love games like dark/demons souls, lost planet1/2 and such. And also what are your favorite games like these???

I like both Japanese and Western style games, but my favorite Western-style game made by Japanese developers probably has to be the Resident Evil series. I like both the classic horror games and the new action games because they're both entertaining in their own ways.

for me, it really just comes down to the intent of the developer. i dont really get too excited about games where it seems like the western influences were just added in for the sake of cashing in on the western markets. however, i adore the souls games because i can tell that the developer was really passionate about them by how those western elements were really carried out. its a matter of reacting to a market vs the creators reacting to themselves.

What's a Western style game? I mean would MGS count as Western style? The early Capcom stuff like Resi Evil or Konami's Silent Hill?

Lost Planet 2 came immediately to mind as I read this. And I agree.

It all depends. Platinum Games makes some very non traditional games for a Japanese developer, I'm pretty sure Mad World was made specifically for a Western audience. I guess it depends on whether they are making the game more "Western" because they feel that best suits the concept of the game or just to get a few extra sales.

I agree with you there. But even if they are just trying to make money or not, I like to see how a different culture perceives western style games and how they would put their own spin on them. Perhaps that is why I like all of platinum games work, along with the mgs franchise and some stuff from capcom and from software. But I definately want it to be made out of passion and not just some game with a generic bald hardass of a protagonist with a bunch of corny one-liners ha.

Now that i've got a grasp of what Western style means then you can also add Resi Evil 4, 5 and the new Silent Hills

I guess the old school Resi Evils and Silent Hills et al would be considered Japanese style?

Hm i never really understand the line between Western and Japanese styles bar the obvious anime style games and JRPG's. Japanese developers are more than capable of making good Western style games.

I've been playing Demon's Souls for about 10 hours now, and nothing about it at all resembles a Western game. It has visceral, deep combat, tons of grinding for items and souls, and a massive learning curve. If being set in a medieval fantasy world somehow makes a game "western" then I laugh at that assertion.

I don't agree with points that make this a non-western style game either. when it comes to rpgs, there are wrpg and jrpg, this has almost nothing in common with a jrpg and has a lot in common with wrpgs. what jrpg have you played with visceral combat?????? lol It is definately a japanese developers take on a western rpg. no doubt about it, there are some very japanese ideas in it, but that is the point of this post and the reason why these types of games are cool.

Western in that you have full control over the development of your character, and there's no focus on storytelling or characters as there are in pretty much every other JRPG imagineable. The Souls games throw you in a world that you can explore at will, it's not linear, it doesn't tell you where to go next (at least not explicitly). I understand why some people might maintain the JRPG label for Demon's Souls and Dark Souls but while they are Japanese developed, they certainly are not JRPGs.

The combat is very much like the majority of other action-RPG's out of Japan. As I continue to play it, a comparison between Demon's Souls and Castlevania: Curse of Darkness continues to pop up in my head. There are very similar elements, but the combat in DS is much better. What about Demon's Souls makes it similar to Dragon Age? Besides the setting.

Why even use the Japanese/Western label if not for place of origin? When that isn't considered, then the "action," "strategy," "turn-based," etc. labels come out to place it in a proper sub-genre of "RPG." This obsession with labeling something "WRPG" or "JRPG" confuses me. I could have sworn that it only ever meant place of origin, and tendency towards a particular learning curve (Japanese RPG's tend to be very steep sometimes with ridiculous end-game requirements; i.e. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne). Not to mention, action-RPG's are much more commonly Japanese-made games. Western-RPG's tend to focus more on either turn-based combat, or action/turn-based hybrids (i.e. KotOR).
