When signing in to play Rainbow six there are all kinds of symbols (mostly dots) that are next to your name as you set up the game players. One is a dot to the right of your rank which can be yellow or red and then there is the "pings" which can be green or yellow and up to three and can change during the process of getting the players together. What do these dots mean?

Ping is derived from "ping pong" where a quick beacon is sent out (like a ping pong ball) and then sent back and the time between is taken. It's a way of getting connection speed/stability. I don't know exactly what dots you're referring to on R6, though.

Ping refers to latency. It tells how long it takes to transfer data between your PC and the server. Basically the lower it is the better.
