Tales of symphonia for gamecube isa really fun action rpg, and has a awsome story. Its like 15$ now, so get it :P
Well it isn't exactly a beginner's RPG, but it starts off easy enough and is easily the best RPG of all time in my opinion (and my 3rd favorite game ever), so I'd say to grab Chrono Trigger. It's for SNES originally, but they've ported it to Playstation and DS, so you could grab it for PS and also get Chrono Cross, which I've never played but if it's even similar it must be amazing.
If you want to start with something easy, then get Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. It's not of the same quality/epicness of the master that is Chrono Trigger, but it's an exceptional RPG with many funny elements.
This too. Except it can get hard, so maybe play this after you get the hang of RPGs. I only rented it years ago, which might explain why I remember it as being hard, but I loved it.Tales of symphonia for gamecube isa really fun action rpg, and has a awsome story. Its like 15$ now, so get it :P

It's so funny how I recently discovered that there's so much hate for JRPG's because they aren't 'real' RPGs...
But anyway, I can agree on games such as Final Fantasy VIII (EASIEST FF, in my opinion.), X, X-2 and XII, along with Dragon Quest 8.
There's also Legend Of Mana (probably hard to get nowadays) Chrono Trigger/Cross, XenoGears/Saga, Breath Of Fire.

Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X
Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross. Trigger is old, but I feel that it is probably the best option if the old graphics don't bother you. It's fun, has great music, and doesn't overcomplicate things while still maintaining enough depth. (It's also like my favorite game ever) At the same time, Chrono Cross was my first RPG and I love it to death as well.
Someone said FF8, which I'm going to have to disagree with since it has a few things that defy general RPG logic. Fun game, but probably not the best place to start.
The Dragon Quest games are well-liked and might be worth a look as well, although I'm not sure how they fare for "beginning" RPGers.
PSX - Legend of Legaia, Grandia
PS2 - Dragon Quest VIII, Final Fantasy X, Grandia II/III, Legaia II: Dual Saga, Radiata Stories, Tales of the Abyss, Shim Megami Tensei: Nocturne
GC - Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos & Baten Kaitos Origins, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

What is this 'general RPG logic' that you speak of? :|
The fact that leveling up is actually counter-productive. The monsters level up with you, making it meaningless to do so; you can literally beat the game without leveling up once. Perhaps I'm just bitter because I killed everything I ever came across and felt like I wasted a significant amount of time :P But I'm also pretty sure that it makes it harder the more you level up if you don't get all the ultimate weapons and such on your first run through, like I didn't.

Erm, even when I got to level 100 with all of my characters, I was able to kill most with 1 - 3 hits. :|
Disregarding the Island Closest To Heaven/Hell of course.
