I'm planning to buy a Dreamcast from my friend (2-3 controllers, and a bunch of games for 35$.)

So I'm asking, what are some great games for the Dreamcast, I'm fine even with import games.

Currently, I'm looking for the great bullet hell shmups on the Dreamcast (or was it the Saturn?) I know there's Ikaruga and Gigawing, but what else?

I don't know much shoot-em-ups on the Dreamcast, but Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Soul Calibur, Jet Grind Radio, and Skies of Arcadia are must own Dreamcast games.

Bangi-o is a great shooter on the dreamcast, as with ikargua. For a party game, you will definatley want powerstone 2, which is essentaly dreamcast's answer to smashbrothers, including the smash ball (powerstones). Another great game would be Cannon spike. Dreamcast is also the king of arcade to home conversions.

I would recommend Sonic adventure 1 & 2, Soul Calibur, Jet Grind Radio, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Shenmue 1 & 2 (not for everyone, but I loved them), Soul Reaver, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Crazy Taxi (The 1st one only, didn't really care for the 2nd one). and Resident Evil Code Veronica.

Granted, you can get many of these games on other systems now, but these are some of my favorites for the system.

In terms of Shooters, I don't know of many other than the ones you mentioned, although I know many exist for the dreamcast as well as the saturn.

In fact, my friend Panzer Zwei recently wrote a blog about such a topic, you should check it out. (Personally, I don't think anyone is more knowlegable about shooters on Sega systems than Panzer Zwei.)

Fighting:

Power Stone 2 (amazing multiplayer)

Soul Calibur

Dead or Alive 2

RPG:

Grandia II

Skies of Arcadia

Adventure:

Sonic Adventure I & II

Soul Reaver

Rayman 2 (best version ever)

Jet Grind Radio

Fur Fighters

Action:

Guts Rage

MDK 2 (hardest game on DC)

Racing:

Sanfrancisco Rush 2049

MSR (before they put it on the Xbox and called it Project Gotham Racing)

Sega Rally 2

Test Drive V Rally (really good track editor)

That's all I can think of right now on my must have list. You might want to do some research to see if each is right for you.

What were some of the great arcade games?

Dynamite Cop! is one of the zaniest games I've ever played. It's ridiculously short (good replay value though) so I wouldn't pay too much for it.

I don't believe I've seen Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves or Last Blade 2 listed. Good luck finding them for cheap though, luckily still have mine. The 2K Sports games are fun. And there are a couple of King of Fighters games as well. Oh yeah, Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament. I'm going to go break out my dreamcast now... memories.

Shenmue ( series )

I think the Tony Hawk re-makes are pretty sweet to
also the Resident Evil Re-Makes even though they are rare.

Crazy Taxi 1

Phantasy Star online ( it was good at the time, too bad there is NO one playing anymore )

Sonic Adventure was sweet

MK:Gold

and thats about it!

Just to add a few:

Resident Evil: Code Veronica (though if you have a PS2 or GC I'd recommend getting that version instead)

Crazy Taxi 1 and 2

Shenmue (not for everyone. the story is the main attraction here, so if you're looking for gameplay go somewhere else)

Seaman (also lacks gameplay. the reason you get this game is because its funny and nothing else like it has ever been made)

Samba de Amigo (expensive as hell)

Bangai-O (also expensive as hell)

Ikaruga (you guessed it...expensive as hell)

Rez (I think you know what I'm going to say at this point. Seeing a pattern here?)

Mars Matrix is a good bullet-hell shmup. There is an article on racketboy outlining some quality shmups. In fact there is a fair bit of coverage on the dreamcast's games on racketboy so you might want to have a bit of a look around there.

My favorites are; Virtua Fighter 3, Shenmue 1 and 2, and the Resident Evils (unless you have them on other systems). I guess I like all the AM2 games like Daytona, Sega Rally and so on. The fishing games were a fun experience too- especially Marine Fishing.
