-System Shock 2 I still haven't beat it I dread returning to it so much. -Condemned: Criminal Origins Freaky and methodical. The prefect combination fot a horror game. -Batman: Arkham City Captures the essence of the Batman universe perfectly. -STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl Much the same as SS2 and CCO, it has a gritty sense of realism that easily suspends disbelief and opens one up for fright and immersion. -Minecraft Time vampire to the extreme. Sit down when the Sun goes down... get up with the Sun and think an hour has gone by. -Shadow of the Colossus Brimming with immersive tendencies and subtle things that just drag you in and under. -Castlevania: Lament of Innocence The soundtrack alone is outstanding atmospheric. It is Michiru Yamane's best work, and a shame it was barely looked at even by established (so-called) CV fans. -Super Metroid Saving the best for last is what I always do. The visual design, the music and every element comes together in a perfection of form that to this day engrosses me like no other game.
Stalker series,nothing more atmospheric than running through the rainy night surrounded by many creepy sounds,hoping not to get attacked by a horde of mutants.
Metro 2033 also had a great atmosphere,very dark,depressing and hopeless one,very fitting one for a game like that...
I also like Fallout series,for its well working mix of end-of-the-world depression and well executed (dark) humor...
Dead Space - kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Felt like I was IN the movie Alien.
Red Dead Redemption. Very good Spaghetti Western atmosphere. Especially during a lightning storm - the lighting effects were very cool. Or just riding my horse at night under a canopy of stars.
Fallout 3. Really enjoyed just hiking around the wasteland with the atmospheric music in the background.
Red Faction Guerrilla. Actually made me feel like I was on a distant planet in a rather desperate situation.
Borderlands, the Assassin's Creed series, Metroid Prime series are just a few, off the top of my head, that drew me in easily into the game's atmosphere, especially Metroid Prime 1. Also, Arkham Asylum and City are excellent for that as well! :)
Dead Space Batman: Arkham City. Dragon Age: Origins. Bioshock 2. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. These are the only ones i can think of right now..
