I'm starting to fire up my snes and maybe pick up some more games. What games did you guys have the most fun with? I don't necessarily want the "best" games on the console, just the ones with the most fun game play. I don't need a super deep game that I really have to invest a ton of thought in. Just some good fun games that are going to keep me happy for hours. A list of your favorite or most fun games that I should check out would be awesome.

Best console of all-time, IMO. So I have a lot of great recommendations for it:

Action/Adventure:

  • Actraiser (Action/Adventure mixed with a building-sim (think SimCity), which turns out surprisingly good)
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (Ninja Gaiden 1, 2, and 3 collected together)
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Castlevania IV (I still haven't had the opportunity to play Castlevania: Dracula X yet, if you're wondering why it's not on my list)

Beat-Em Up:

  • Final Fight 1-3
  • The Death & Return of Superman
  • Marvel Super-Heroes: War of the Gems
  • Maximum Carnage (Spider-Man)
  • Separation Anxiety (Spider-Man)
  • X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse

Fighting:

  • Mortal Kombat 2 & 3 (MK 1 on SNES is just too butchered and edited to be any fun, because you're too busy moaning about what the game is missing)
  • Samurai Shodown
  • Street Figher: Alpha 2
  • Super Street Fighter II

Platformer:

  • Cool Spot
  • Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Mario All-Stars (Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, 3, and Japanese SMB 2 all collected together)

Shoot-Em Up:

  • Aero Fighters
  • Darius Twin
  • Raiden
  • R-Type III
  • Super R-Type

Other:

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars (2D Run-N-Gun at it's chaotic best)
  • Mega Man X
  • Super Mario Kart (Racing with a Nintendo flavor)
  • Tetris & Dr. Mario (2 of the best puzzle games EVER collected together)

I also want to recommend Star Fox, but in the back of my mind I know how horrible the years have been to it.

From what I have played, my favorite SNES game is Mega Man 7. I haven't played many though, but I had a lot of fun with this one. I've played some RPG remakes that I really like, but I didn't play the original versions, and it doesn't sound like you are looking for RPG's anyway.

-Super Mario All-Stars

-Super Mario World

-Zombies Ate My Neighbors

-Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past

-Harvest Moon

-Chrono Trigger

-Earthbound

-Final Fantasy III

-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time

-Super Mario Kart

-Mortal Kombat II

-NBA Jam

I'm sure a few of these can be bought online for under $20, but games like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy III are a bit more expensive. I believe I bought Final Fantasy for around $30, Chrono Trigger for about $40, and while I didn't buy it I've seen Earthbound listed at over $100 on multiple sites.
