I would recommend Donkey Kong 64, GoldenEye 007, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Paper Mario, Perfect Dark, Super Mario 64, and Super Smash Bros.ArmoredCore55
Goldeneye and Perfect dark are nice to have if your collecting, but they are pretty horrible to play in 2009.

I still play GoldenEye 007 on occasion, but I haven't played Perfect Dark in a long time. I still love GoldenEye 007. ;)I would recommend Donkey Kong 64, GoldenEye 007, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Paper Mario, Perfect Dark, Super Mario 64, and Super Smash Bros.ArmoredCore55Me personally, I'd replace DK64 with Banjo Kazooie on that list. But yeah, that's pretty much the essential N64 list.
I'm not going to pretend that I know all of the best games, but these are ones that I enjoyed:

This list, plus Ogre Battle 64, one of the finest games ever.
Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie are fantastic. Diddy Kong Racing has lots to offer as a kart racing game. Mario Tennis is something I recommend as well.
Any Games Published Or Made By Rare...And This Has Probably Been Mentioned A Bunch Of Times. Perfect Dark The Best(And Most Technically Advanced)Game For The 64. Hope You Have An Expansion Pack.Back In 2000 I Got Mad When I Figured Out That It Needs The Pak For Maximum Gameplay (Which Is Basically The Campaign And Some Extra Goodies). :P
In regards to Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark: I understand why they're on these lists -- I get it. I own both of them and loved them when they first came out. But honestly, I find it hard to enjoy them now. Ever since Halo came along on the XBox and changed console FPSs forever, it seems impossible to go back to the choppy/inconsistent framerates and single-analog control schemes.
Make sure you get Goldeneye because it may never be rereleased. However you might just want to get the 360 update of Perfect Dark, it should be much more enjoyable without that horrible framerate.

You have a good point. Shooters is one genre where the new installments are usually better than the old ones and there's not much point to playing an old edition when a new one exists. It's still fun to play, but when I think about it, I might as well just play a new shooter that has more to it than an old one.

Yup. Sports, FPS, and racing all age rapidly.[QUOTE="ADeftRoach"]

While this is true, you could say the same for all games on the N64. If you are going to play a retro system, you cant play the games expecting something from this generation.[QUOTE="get-ka12"][QUOTE="ADeftRoach"]

The thing is, I can't personally say the same for all N64 games, which is very interesting. Why is that certain games or genres age well and others don't? It's not a simple matter. I play through SM64 about every two years. Not too long ago, I played through Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask (and now I like Majora's Mask MORE than I ever have, whereas before I was indifferent). The thing is, I can't personally say the same for all N64 games, which is very interesting. I still love the game.
Turok 2: Seeds Of Evil - still awesome, totally holds up today. Though the save point and frame rate problems are resolved in the PC version.razzkazzI never got into that game when I picked it up. I really should try it again since I've gotten better at gaming.
