Hello!

I've been wondering about this, since I have played with many horror games before, even with the old Doom,Quake and Heretic games.

There are also the newer ones, like Doom 3, Quake 4 , Painkiller ,Prey, Dead Space, Left for Dead, Deadrising, Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green. Some may also list here F.E.A.R. and/or Bioshock.Perhaps I had forgotten about some of it but these are from the top of my head. If you are curious about what were my favorites, they were F.E.A.R (the first one), Condemned: Criminal Origins, Aliens vs Predator 2 and my the most favorite is Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (despite the bugs it had, the suspense was amazing in that game.It also had a sanity meter which in contrast with Fahrenheit's sanity meter bar actually showed how the protagonist is in pain, like blurred vision, shaking, shuddering, and mumbling sounds in despair.

SPOILER WARNING

The protagonist could also have a mental breakdown in extreme cases,or if a pistol is in his hands, could commit suicide.

END OF SPOILER

Alan Wake
While not necessarily a horror game, it does strike a few nerves and can get pretty creepy.
Left 4 Dead

I'd say Dead Space too. The trailers alone scare me :P

Not a proper horror game, but I enjoyed Silent Hill Shattered Memories quite a bit, and Amnesia is one of the scariest I've played in recent memory.

From this gen: Alan Wake.

It technically isn't a horror game, but it does have a creepy atmospehere and moments.

Game that is labeled horror, but I love for other reasons: Resident Evil 4. Game I love specifically for the horror aspects: Probably Silent Hill 2 maybe Amnesia.

Skyrim: every loading screen was a thriller "Will it load? Or will it freeze? Ah the suspense! The tension!"

Dead Space - definitely in my top 3 games of this generation. And...that's about it. Dead Space 2 was way too busy being a corridor shooter to waste any time establishing atmosphere. Stuff like Resident Evil 5 and Dead Island weren't even remotely scary.

Last gen my favorite was probably Cold Fear, sort of a Resident Evil type thing, set on a ship and an offshore oil rig. Very good game with a really creepy atmosphere throughout.

We have very similar game tastes, it seems. All of these games are my favourites in the genre as well.

I still haven't finished Cthulhu, yet, but I plan to. Definitely one of those titles that sadly seems to get overlooked.

Amnesia, to a certain extent. Dead Space series is awesome. They're not scary, but they do provide some jump scares, it keeps the tension going, and of course you better play it on hard mode. The feeling of being all alone in space really immerses you in the game's atmosphere.

Silent Hill 2 and Fatal Frame 2 are the kings of the horror genre. No other game/games come even CLOSE to being as awesome and scary as those two.

Silent Hill 2 in general is one of the most brilliant games ever made.
