Do you think renting games instead of buying them hurt the industry or help it? Some people like me don't care much for online play, so spending 60+ tax on a four to five hour sp campaign seems a bit steep. Renting games like that instead of buying them has saved me tons of cash in the long run.

I used to rent games when I was a teenager, but now I just buy them. But I never pay full price for a game anymore. Think the most I've spent on a game lately was $30.

I just don't like renting games. I like to have a collection. Even if a game is short or has little replay value, I'll still have the knowledge that I can go back and play the game again whenever I want to.

Hurts big time. but the movie industry has set the standard... I would never rent a game. rentals drive up the purchase price.

buy games if they are gonna have awesome, long lasting multiplayer. rent everything else. i find the only games i can still pop in my 360 and genuinely enjoy are halo 3 and cod 4. even mass effect (probably the best game ive ever played) gets boring after the second playthrough. i have a lot of games sitting on my shelf because i used to buy all my games. though i think if you buy a game, you get just a little more fun out of it. i dunno, i guess its just whether or not paying $55 more for a little more fun with it is okay with you. its not with me, since im on a budget and there are a lot of games i want to play.

Renting games doesn't exist here in Philippines. But we have gaming console cafes. Only $2 an hour. :D

I have no idea why renting would hurt the industry but I still don't do it. I haven't rented any games since I got a Simpsons game for Genesis from Blockbuster. Renting is all about playing in short bursts and rushing the experience. I don't like that at all. Besides, the money I would use for renting, I could use on used games like I did with Oblivion and Megaman Anniversary Edition.

What really?! Well that's another good reason to not rent.

Some games were meant to be rented. I can't justify spending $50 or $60 on a game that's going to last 10 hours. Heavenly Sword usually gets the prime example of this. It's a fun game, but it's criminally short. Not worth full price. If you want a more recent example look at Wario Land: Shake It. Very short game. Sure if you want to find every extra treasure chest you can spend a lot more time on the game, but it's a 6 hour game otherwise.

Uh, why to rent games? You can play them for a short time and it costs a fortune.

When you buy your game for yourself, you can play it whenever you want, just as long as you want, again and again and again and again...

For some reason, I just like to see when the game I love is on the shelf. I feel satisfied, finally it is MINE!

Yeah used games from Marvel Ultimate Alliance to Devil May Cry 4 costs from $15-17. Renting is a waste of time.

I get brand new games for 5 nights for 3$ per. Thats hardly a waste lol. 90% of games are worthless crap and would be an even bigger waste of money. I think rental stores HELP the video game industry. Do you have any idea how much they account for all game sales?? I'd guess 50-75% of all sales. And they buy the games for full or near full price.

I think if the video game industry had to depend on individuals to support them they would go belly up in an instant or the variety would be MUCH worse as publishers/developers have to be even more selective.

The industry would rather sell 1 copy of a game for 1000$ than 1000 copies for 1$ just so they can save money on packaging and what not. They are screwing us over big time so I dont feel bad about renting games or getting them off ebay at all. Either way they are driving themselves into extinction.

Actually you can't. I've even emailed R-kioski about the issue. They used rent PS2 games from one sucky publishers but stopped the whole business because no other publisher made deals with them and their selection was too limited as it was. Are you Finnish? I can PM you the email I got from them.

I did born Finland, but I used to live in England for over five years, so I may lack a little in language, but just a little. Nowadays I'm back, though.

They stopped the business? If you have the email still, I would gladly read it.

I'm just like you. Rarely play online. But want to play all the great one's that come out. If the review says it can be done in less than 20 hours I'm renting it. Asides from sports games and GOW I rarely play a game twice after I beat it.

Well I think it can be beneficial in the sense that it helps people decide whether or not a title is worth owning. Many times I will rent games solely to evaluate their quality and if I like what I see, then I will add it to my "to buy" list.

I went from renting almost all of my games as a teenager to buying all my games in my early 20s and now I rent most games and buy the ones I know I'll get lasting value from.

Really, having a collection is nice, but I have a ton of games from last gen that just sit around. Is it nice to have them there, knowing that I can play them? Sure. Do I ever play them? God no, I have no time.

Besides, $30 a month for unlimited rentals isn't a bad deal, so even if I keep one game for a month and play the hell out of it I'm still saving half the purchase price. Not that I would, of course, I use my pass mostly to sample everything, and sometimes it results in me returning my rental for something else immediately and buying the game in question because it's so good.

That pretty much sums up my life as well. It kind of hit me right at the start of the last gen when I looked at all those old PS1 and N64 games and realized I very rarely touched them after finishing them. Renting now saves me at least $50 a month, and that's being conservative. Now instead of getting all those new games I can get a couple nice extra pieces of a furniture each year instead.

Im starting to look at trading in games again to save money as opposed to renting them. I am far too lazy to go to the video store and return soemthing blah blah blah thats work. Im thinking about keeping most of the longer games or ones I reeeally like and getting good trade value while they're hot to play more. There is much more money for teh baerz this way.

I won't rent games nor will I buy used games. There is just something about the aesthetic of looking over at my shelves and seeing row after row of finely placed and organized video games.

Another challenge I have to face is time. When I buy games I sometimes don't get to them for a couple of weeks or so just because I work or I have other projects I have to do. I guess I don't feel that rushed to play a game so I play games on my own time line, which is how I thinkit should be.

Buying games contributes heavily to my ever growing back log but unlike other enthusiast in my hobby I actually like having one.

Please use Goozex if you trade again. I used to get ripped off so much at the game store I tried at.

I used to rent, but I buy all the games I want now.

The only games that should be considered for rental, are the ones that are pathetically short and have you a little interested.

Games that I'm only trying to get achievements from (RB2, sports games, etc.) I rent, games I play online I buy. But my dad owns a video store, so I never needed to buy games. Now I don't see him much, so I just stick to about 4 games that I own.

In the 16bit era I mostly rented games because those carts cost a lot. I did own a few games

In the 32 bit era I mostly bought games.

Last gen I mostly bought games

This gen I mostly rent because I don't play as much as I used too.

I just do what's convenient for me.
