Castlevania II: Simon's Quest isn't bad, it's just not the same game as Castlevania or Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. All three have their own goods and bads, Simon's Quest's goods and bads are just radically different.
Hydlide can actually be fun if it's on mute (ugh the music) and you have the general idea of how the game works.
Standing in the dark, in graveyards, or in water makes your health deplete, standing in buildings and forests makes your health stagnate, while standing in an open field causes your health to regenerate.
Another point the Angry Video Game Nerd touched on was the save system. The password system allows you to continue your game later after powering the system down. Pressing save makes a state that you can simply load back up by hitting the load button until you shut the game off.
He seemed to misinterperate this as: Press save to get a password and load doesn't do anything.
(By the by, Hydlide predates The Legend of Zelda)
Regardless, I've always preferred Mr. Rolfe's reviews of games he actually likes or has childhood memories of. Not only does it generally mean he knows more about the game, but I can tell what he's saying comes from his heart and it really makes a difference.
