I was originally thinking about picking up a PS2 with HL1 to play it, but it was a bit of money for one game, and then today I got a ton of Game Stop credit (enough to pay off Portal 2 and have a bit left over) and saw they had orange box, so I went aghead and picked it up. So, what do I need to know about 1 before I dive into 2?

Just look up a summary of the storyfor HL1 to get up to speed... That's what I did before I played HL2.

as per that, I looked, and it's 10 bucks, and system requirements are a big problem. I can't even run a flash game without my computer having to be rebooted. And I'll just read a summary then, thanks. Can't wait to dig in. So far all I've played is Portal, and that is easy seeing as I've 100% the XBLA version.

Half-Life source? cool, might actually download and play it again. But otherwise, just read the summary and pray that The Black Mesa Project gets released by the time you finish 2 and its episodes, that way you can fully experience 1 on the source engine.

Here's a bullet point breakdown:

  • There's aliens.
  • You have to shoot them.

I never played the first and when playing the second, I never felt like I needed to know what happened in the first game.

It is a really good game and i suggest you play it, but if you don't want to:

*Spoilers*

Gordon Freeman (the player) does his job at the Black Mesa Research Facility and accidentally opens up a portal to another universe/dimension called Xen. Some humanoid aliens come out of the portal and they are called Vortigaunts. They attack you and any people they encounter. There are also a number of more animal like aliens that attack Gordon. Eventually Gordon goes into Xen and kills the leader of the Vortigaunts. We find out that the leader of the Vortigaunts is actually controlling the Vortigaunts and is using them as slaves (I actually didn't know this until I read it online, the story isn't told very well in the game). By killing their leader Gordon frees the Vorts from their prison (but we never really see this in game, you find out about it in HL2). At the very end you are encountered by the G-Man who gives you a choice: Work for him or die. When you work for him you are put into stasis until the next game.

That is basically it. It gets much more complicated in HL2, but much better.

It's not that I don't want to play it, it's that even if I get a PS2 cheap (which isn't that unusual) I still need to buy a memory card and the game, and I don't know if I can afford that around the Xbox games coming out this year, plus the ones I need to catch up on (like Mass Effect 2).

half life 2 is awsome. It has a ton of variety and is a really great game. and (unlike most series) You don't need to play half life 1 first. I went through quite a bit of trouble finding and finally playing half lfie 1 before I played 2. I don't think I really needed to play the first one.

That's what I thought. I didn't think it was like Mass Effect where you really need to play them in order.

I actually don't think you were supposed to know that until HL2. Gordon went to Xen for the whole purpose of stopping the invasion, I don't think he was aware he was liberating an enslaved alien race.

Of course its all seen through your eyes and all I know is I wanted those bastards to stop electrocuting me.
