I've played all the FF games throughout the years, and FFVII ranks in my top 3. It is that good in my opinion, and I've always had the sneaking suspicion that some (but by no means all, so save your flames) people just dislike #7 because it's cool (insufferably spelled kewl)to dislike what everyone else likes.
final fantasy 7 is one of the most overated games of all time.. still a good game though, but in my opinion final fantasy 6 was by far the better game. my fave of the seriesdoll94
Cut and paste approved.
Its a good game but very overrated. One of my top 5 FF tittle. Maybe not one of the best RPG titles but a good game none the less.
It's a great game. Everybody has their own opinions about anything, FFVII notwithstanding. I prefer FF Tactics over any other FF personally.
Its a great game that's worth playing. My favorite Final Fantasy is IX, but VII comes in second. Its kinda funny how blocky, Lego like characters can say really serious dialogue, but at the same time, its really cool.
Great game. Aged poorly though :(Black_Knight_00
I disagree,my times with FFVII are still as great as they were a decade ago.
I don't care what people say,it's the best game ever made.
Great game. Aged poorly though :(Black_Knight_00You know, I think that this is possibly the best way to put it. People judge the game based on current standards. Back when FF VII was brought out the RPG world really hadn't had a stand out game since FF VI and Chrono Trigger. Sure there were games like Arc The Lad and the likes that came out that were either RPG based or had RPG elements like Allundra, but there really wasn't a big time RPG since the SNES stuff. FF VII was one of the first big RPG's and had great graphics for the time that made many people very excited for the graphical expectations of games following that.
Now it is just a standard RPG, I think that the big spoiler in the game has been talked about so many times and referenced that people don't care about it anymore. Back then it was shocking, now it is just another part of the stepping stone plot that makes a little sense. When the story gets told too many times and the shocking elements have been told over and over again the game loses the things that make it unique or interesting... I think that this is why FF VII has gotten so much negativity in the past few years.
When I first got to play it, it was one of the only RPGs I had ever played. However, with time and several dozen RPGs to separate me from that experience, I can say that FFVII is definitely not as great as a lot of people say it is. It's not even in my top five for the series.

That's pretty much how I feel about it.

Quoted.For.Truth! I still find the world, the graphics, the soundtrack and the experience of Final Fantasy VII as beautiful as I did when the game was first released.while im not sure what X-play is (is it a TV channel, sorry but it must be a US only thing), but FF7 is awesome in my opinion.
I respect anyone who disagrees with me but I think its the best Final Fantasy (and ive played all of the main ones, other then 11)
FFVII is a good game but nothing stellar. The one thing that I remain disappointed with is the English translation. Of the FF games though, I and XII are still my favorites.
It's a show on G4. I do have VII, and I really like it, but no more or less then any of the other Final Fantasy games.while im not sure what X-play is (is it a TV channel, sorry but it must be a US only thing), but FF7 is awesome in my opinion.

I think the fact that there are so many discussions all over the place just like this one proves that the game has great lasting power. It obviously impacted the industry enough to stay around for many years afterwards. I have beaten the game multiple times and still enjoy playing it today. It has a good story with memorable characters and some of the most epic and memorable moments in video game history. Yes, I think there are better RPGs out there, but when the game was released it was meant to bring the genre to the mainstream and it accomplished the task brilliantly. People talk about this game so much because of the great impact it had on gaming, whether the people talking about it think it is the greatest game ever or the most over-hyped. The game is good enough to receive consideration from many for the title of greatest game of all time, and it is also good enough to create massive arguments about its greatness.
Overrated but I still like it a lot. People have to realize though that the reason it is so loved is because when it first came out it was MIND BLOWING. The graphics and the cutscenes were just amazing.
Going back and playing it now though its not even near my top 5 favorite FF games.
I sincerely consider itto be the best game ever made. The story, characters, visuals and music all blew me away. The way the music perfectly matched the locations was almost hypnotic at times. Sometimes, I even sat down the controller for a minute to just savor it all.

It's a show on G4. I do have VII, and I really like it, but no more or less then any of the other Final Fantasy games. G4.....you mean that US TV channel, im from the UK and we dont have it here so excuse my rather dumb questions :)I'll just copy/paste my recent blog.
Back in about 2005, I was browsing through Gamestop. In the store I happened across Final Fantasy VII used for $16. I had never played a single RPG before then, but I bought it anyway. After about 16 hours of playtime, I gave up when I came across a boss I couldn't beat. This was primarily due to my inexperience in RPG's and things such as level grinding and effective spell casting. Flash forward about four years, during the course of that time were three failed attempts to beat the game. I practically gave up until I found a stradegy guide at another game store, bought it, and vowed to beat Final Fantasy VII, one of the biggest goals I have set for myself as far as video games go. (Nerdy, yes I know)
After pushing through the final half of the game, I beat it. I was overwhelmed by a feeling of triumph and satisfaction. But now the question arises, is it as good as it's hyped up to be? Or is it as overrated as it's naysayers believe?
It's neither. I have a habit of taking the middle ground on most issues, but this game is not as terrible as some people say, but it's still not the gaming equivalent of Jesus. It's a very well made game that told a story and provided an experience that mesmorized a lot of people.
There are plenty of things I liked about the game. I loved it's ragtag group of heroes, except for Cait Sith, he can go to Hell. I loved the secrets, hidden areas, extra sidequests, special weapons and armor. But what I love most of all is Final Fantasy VII's overall sense of adventure and progression. Just exploring the game's world was a joy to behold, with an incredible variety of towns and locales. When I first got the airship, I was excited and spent about 5 minutes just flying around.
I love Final Fantasy VII. It's definately overrated, but that does not make it a terrible game. I'd even put in my top ten not only for the experience it provided ingame, but for the long and ultimately rewarding experience it provided when I finally beat it.
Final Fantasy VII was a good RPG for it's time, but in my opinion I feel both VIII and IX were better games. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a solid 8.
Back in 2004, I bought FFVII for $15 newat a Sam Goody. It is a great game and a classic. The problems I had with the game were the graphics and the lack of the dualshock controls. I can't really blame the game because it was released before the dualshock came out.
The story was good, although there were a few plotholes and the characters were also great. The cutscenes were awesome and my favorite would be Cloud falling in a spiral before fighting Sephiroth in the third disk. The soundtrack is also one of my favorites as Nobuo Uematsu is a genius. However, it is not my favorite Final Fantasy (IX is my favorite).
I think the game is not only a bit overrated in certain areas, considering VI was similar in some ways, I do think the game is also overhated for being popular. I bought the game about a year before AC came out. It seems that most people have labeled this game overrated after that movie was released. It wasn't a great movie (flash but no substance)and I think people are sick of SE milking the franchise. Also, the fanboys and Fangirls are annoying.
Overall, I'd give it a 9/10 because I did spend over 70 hours in that game getting everyones limit break and facing the weapons. It's tied with VI as my second favorite Final Fantasy.
PS: I think FFVIII is overrated at least on this site. However this is just my opinion as everyone has there personal favorite and there most hated. I also want to check out FFIV sometime in the future.
A lot of people in their late teens/early twenties grew up with ff7 as their first foray into japanese rpg's. And frankly it was amazing. It is the sort of game that I can fondly remember the exact circumstances under which I finally beat Emerald weapon and I still listen to the music from time to time. Unfortunately, although I don't think that it has aged any worse than its contemporaries, those of us who think it was amazing and hype it to younger people are really on to a losing battle. People who haven't played it yet are unlikely to suddenly develop the sort of affinity with it that those of us who played it when it first came out did.
Is it a good game? For me sure. I think everyone who likes that sort of thing will like it. But it is no better (or worse) than the newer final fantasies or even games like last remnant.
No game/film/music lasts forever except to those who grew up with it.
