Finally played it after all this time, and have come back to tell the tale of how it is the best Rpg on the PS2. My view may not apply to all of you so lets discuss the streghts and weaknesses of the game, and whether you liked it or not. Maybe a 1-1-0 scale ya?

Not the best RPG on PS2, but it's an excellent game. I gave it a 9.0:

http://www.gamespot.com/dragon-quest-viii-journey-of-the-cursed-king/user-reviews/807840/platform/ps2

I thought the visuals and its sense of adventure was amazing and the combat and customization were very well balanced.

The story was slightly weak, but the incredibly sharp writing and the humor made up for it.

I thought the grinding was too slow but I loved how meaty the game was.

I love it, it's one of my favourite games, if not my favourite. I've got 13 full playthroughs on it and am on my 14th (although I haven't touched it in a while). I've clocked so many hours on it. Love everything from the charming characters and voice acting, to the soundtrack and beautiful visuals. And I love that it's a simple and traditional RPG. It doesn't try to innovate, but what it does, it does very well.

One thing about Dragon Quest or the Warrior games, even the monster catching games, they are all slow. But a lot of people like it, gives ya a chance to see the world that the characters live in.

Yeah, but the thing is: if the grinding would have been a bit faster, it would have shaved maybe about 10 hours or so off the game, still leaving a huge 60 hour game.

That's the other thing, Dragonquest is more of a game you play without being invested to much in the story or customization. So it's the primary way the series has almost always used to extend gameplay length. However, within the recent decade like with DQ7 and onward, I think that the length of the games are long enough without it, but they still insist on that to make the games longer. I guess some people prefer it, though i am confused as to why they are still doing it giving that even the Final Fantasies are around 8 hours or so long now.

Yo, look I said the only other person, which mean two. But yes, i agree, I ain't still yer life savings why ya jumping on me? But it's still a good game to the end though, i eventually learned to tolerate grinding outside of the pre-early rpgs.

I don't know how many DQ games you've experienced, but a DQ game without grinding is like a FF game without annoyingly high pitched voices. =P

The graphics and animation really do make Dragon Quest VIII stand out perfect for being a JRPG. It was also the first Dragon Quest game we got in the UK back in 2006 and loved it ever since

Quite a few actually, V being my favorite, but for some reason I did find it a bit grindy; maybe it was in comparison to other RPGs on the PS2 at the time.

They dropped it because Digimon was more popular in japan and growing at the time and they assumed that it applied Woeldwide as well. there was an interview about that mistake, and how the merge had project on hold many times,

That's almost all of them then, since Final Fantasy didn't have voice acting until FFX. :P Anyway though, I really like the grinding in Dragon Quest. The series has always been about the battles and roleplaying as none of them are really story-driven.

It was a charming game, with likable characters, light-hearted humurous writing, and enjoyable simple gameplay.

However, the plot was quite weak and cliched (Dragon Quest V had the best storytelling in the series, IMO).

I didn't like it. The day I bought it I was really happy, I thought I was going to have a blast with it, and I was very hyped thanks to Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2), but when I played it...meh.

I have given it many chances over the years, but I still don't like it (I have played for around 12- 14h ).

The story is really weak and I really hated the British accents in the game, they were awful. I blame Square on that one, since DC 2 had some really good voices.

But what really annoys me is the grinding. It's too much, too slow to level up, and you can't carry many items. They really should have made it more accessible, it's way too frustrating (and I played BOF V, which everyone thinks it's hard, and it's not and Ephemeral Fantasia which is very frustrating too, and I still like it more than DQ8). And the random encounter rate is too 90's!!!

I have to admit it's still a good game, around 8.0/10, but it isn't my cup of tea. They made it too Japanese on its difficulty, they should have changed a thing or two.

And Dark Chronicle, Final Fantasy XII and Shadow Hearts: Covenant are way better games to play on the Ps2, how can you play DQ8 if you have those?

I have Final Fantasy XII and I can play Dragon Quest VIII just fine.

About the random encounter rate: it's actually quite relaxed, especially compared to other games in the genre.

Most of what you said are fair points, and they're perfect reasons to dislike the game. I just want to point out that your inventory is infinite. Unless you're talking about each character individually, which I don't really see why you'd need much more space than they give you for each character :P

Yes, it's true it's better than many other games (like Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call and Digital Devil Saga), but I still it has a high enconter rate with low experience points given ratio.

Yup, items on characters individually, I think they should have gone with a infinite item option while in battle.

The thing is, I really don't get any motivation from this game. It's something difficult to explain, I can't have much fun with the game, sometimes the game is fun, but other times it gets really frustrating while in battles, sometimes the enemies are too cheap and you need a considerable time to level up in order to defeat them (with ease).

SMT: Lucifer's Call is actually more fun to me and I think it might be a more difficult game than DQ8. But I don't mind the grinding on that game as much as in DQ8.

I know a lot of people really like this game, but for me it isn't that good. I have around 70% of all Ps2 and Ps1 Rpg's (Pal versions), and agree on most of the general opinion on them, but DQ8 is the one where I totally disagree on everyone saying it's a 90% plus game.

It's more of a personal taste thing. For some, it was their first DQ game, so they weren't used to the grinding.

Although, i've got to say, most of the main series games don't require a huge amount of grinding, unless you simply must have the best equipment possible (which is often times not necessary) in which case, yeah, grinding for gold takes a while.

What? The British voice acting was one of the best things about the game! I've never been too fond of American dubs, so it was a breath of fresh air to play a Japanese RPG with British accents... And it wasn't even a dub this time, since the original Japanese version never had any voice acting. Besides, a medieval fantasy setting with American accents just wouldn't sound right.

The voice acting took some getting used to, but I really liked it as well.

Looking through the pages, you seem to be the rpg guy of the forum. I bet you could give.me recommendations. I like games such as this, DQ8, Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger, 7th saga, dark cloud, and skies of Acadia being among my favorites. What do you suggest?

Perhaps you would like one of the Breath of Fire games (except for Dragon Quarter).

If you haven't played it, FFIX, or maybe Super Mario RPG or Grandia since you seem to like lighthearted turn-based RPGs.

Smrpg is a bit too light for me but you're others interest me. But if I may ask, a summary of gameplay of the bof games. I say this because dragon quart was the first and only game I played of the series leaving a bad taste.

BoF 1-4 are traditional turn-based RPGs with dragon transformations thrown in; they are nothing like Dragon Quarter.  If you like DQ8's battle system, you will enjoy the battle systems in the BoF series.
