Not the best RPG on PS2, but it's an excellent game. I gave it a 9.0:Â

I thought the visuals and its sense of adventure was amazing and the combat and customization were very well balanced.Â
The story was slightly weak, but the incredibly sharp writing and the humor made up for it.Â
I thought the grinding was too slow but I loved how meaty the game was.Â
One thing about Dragon Quest or the Warrior games, even the monster catching games, they are all slow. But a lot of people like it, gives ya a chance to see the world that the characters live in.Not the best RPG on PS2, but it's an excellent game. I gave it a 9.0:Â

Yeah, but the thing is: if the grinding would have been a bit faster, it would have shaved maybe about 10 hours or so off the game, still leaving a huge 60 hour game. Â

That's the other thing, Dragonquest is more of a game you play without being invested to much in the story or customization. So it's the primary way the series has almost always used to extend gameplay length. However, within the recent decade like with DQ7 and onward, I think that the length of the games are long enough without it, but they still insist on that to make the games longer. I guess some people prefer it, though i am confused as to why they are still doing it giving that even the Final Fantasies are around 8 hours or so long now.[QUOTE="AcidSoldner"]Great RPG. But like others have said, a bit too grindy.Yo-SUPYou are the only other person to say this. but I agree. Greyseal also mentioned grinding. And it's quite a common complaint with the game :P

But yes, i agree, I ain't still yer life savings why ya jumping on me? But it's still a good game to the end though, i eventually learned to tolerate grinding outside of the pre-early rpgs.
Great RPG. But like others have said, a bit too grindy.AcidSoldnerI don't know how many DQ games you've experienced, but a DQ game without grinding is like a FF game without annoyingly high pitched voices. =P
The graphics and animation really do make Dragon Quest VIII stand out perfect for being a JRPG. It was also the first Dragon Quest game we got in the UK back in 2006 and loved it ever since

The series has always been about the battles and roleplaying as none of them are really story-driven.
Best RPG on PS2 and in the top 10 of all time.

Damn you guys are making me want to play this game now. I haven't played IV, VII or VIII yet. But I love the series.
I didn't like it. The day I bought it I was really happy, I thought I was going to have a blast with it, and I was very hyped thanks to Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2), but when I played it...meh.
I have given it many chances over the years, but I still don't like it (I have played for around 12- 14h ).
The story is really weak and I really hated the British accents in the game, they were awful. I blame Square on that one, since DC 2 had some really good voices.Â
But what really annoys me is the grinding. It's too much, too slow to level up, and you can't carry many items. They really should have made it more accessible, it's way too frustrating (and I played BOF V, which everyone thinks it's hard, and it's not and Ephemeral Fantasia which is very frustrating too, and I still like it more than DQ8). And the random encounter rate is too 90's!!!
I have to admit it's still a good game, around 8.0/10, but it isn't my cup of tea. They made it too Japanese on its difficulty, they should have changed a thing or two.Â
And Dark Chronicle, Final Fantasy XII and Shadow Hearts: Covenant are way better games to play on the Ps2, how can you play DQ8 if you have those? Â

I have Final Fantasy XII and I can play Dragon Quest VIII just fine.
About the random encounter rate: it's actually quite relaxed, especially compared to other games in the genre.
Most of what you said are fair points, and they're perfect reasons to dislike the game. I just want to point out that your inventory is infinite. Unless you're talking about each character individually, which I don't really see why you'd need much more space than they give you for each character :PI didn't like it. Yes, it's true it's better than many other games (like Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call and Digital Devil Saga), but I still it has a high enconter rate with low experience points given ratio.

Â
Yup, items on characters individually, I think they should have gone with a infinite item option while in battle.
Â
The thing is, I really don't get any motivation from this game. It's something difficult to explain, I can't have much fun with the game, sometimes the game is fun, but other times it gets really frustrating while in battles, sometimes the enemies are too cheap and you need a considerable time to level up in order to defeat them (with ease).
SMT: Lucifer's Call is actually more fun to me and I think it might be a more difficult game than DQ8. But I don't mind the grinding on that game as much as in DQ8.Â
Â
I know a lot of people really like this game, but for me it isn't that good. I have around 70% of all Ps2 and Ps1 Rpg's (Pal versions), and agree on most of the general opinion on them, but DQ8 is the one where I totally disagree on everyone saying it's a 90% plus game.Â
strange how people complain about the grinding, when I don't remember it being any more grindy than any other DQ game.Allicrombie
It's more of a personal taste thing. For some, it was their first DQ game, so they weren't used to the grinding.Â
Although, i've got to say, most of the main series games don't require a huge amount of grinding, unless you simply must have the best equipment possible (which is often times not necessary) in which case, yeah, grinding for gold takes a while.

What? The British voice acting was one of the best things about the game! I've never been too fond of American dubs, so it was a breath of fresh air to play a Japanese RPG with British accents... And it wasn't even a dub this time, since the original Japanese version never had any voice acting. Besides, a medieval fantasy setting with American accents just wouldn't sound right.

If you haven't played it, FFIX, or maybe Super Mario RPG or Grandia since you seem to like lighthearted turn-based RPGs.
