What does it take to get better at gaming?

I'm about to finish the final mission in The Conduit, and after playing through the Elevated difficulty throughout most of the game, I decided to just return to the default (Guarded) difficulty for the rest of it. The main reason is I just wanted to get it over with and it was getting difficult. Do you think this being the first FPS I ever played could be a reason too?

For those who have been gaming for a long time, especially first-person shooters, what does it take for you to get better and move on to harder difficulties? Time? Patience? Age? Etc...

Like everything else in life, experience makes you better. If it's your first time playing an FPS you can't expect to be very good. Play more though and you'll get better. Online multiplayer is probably the quickest way to getting better though. Playing against other humans is difficult enough to the point that you get killed quickly if you're doing something wrong, but not so difficult that the experience becomes an exercise in frustration like trying play a single player mode on the hardest difficulty setting.

Practice, effort, the willingness to play different genres, learn in different ways, keeping an open mind, playing games of all age groups. Being good at a game isn't an over night thing, for the more experienced gamers in the world it's been a case of years of video games well before we had the games we have today, playing games that, at best, pratically seemed to chew you up and spit you out before jumping on you several times.

Just keep praticing, keep learning and over the years you might end up becoming a good gamer. It's a life thing.

I think I was better in the past. Games are getting easier now for the most part.

Doubt I could beat Super Mario Bros 3 wearing the frog suit again. Probably would just give up after a couple of tries. Have no patience now.

But really, to get better at gaming... play hard games, don't give up, keep your cool and be patient.

I would suggest just practice and study. Each game takes time to master and you'll find that certain games contain patterns and if you can find these patterns (whether they be AI behavior or slight glitches) then you'll find yourself making way through each games.Yagr_Zero

Traditionally, I haven't moved on to higher difficulties, but I might do that with The Conduit and Call of Duty: World at War. Also, I'm playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 right now, and I have it on Easy. But I'll go higher later on.
