Whats so bad about FFX-2? In my opinion FFXII is the worst.Kamikazi_303
Dude X-2 was bad the story was terrible and the whole time I played it the style of art in it was stupid. As for XII I don't see why people have a problem with it. IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE OTHER BATTLE SYSTEMS (exclude X) except that you walk around and the AI intelligence was as intelligent as you made them.
It's really hard to go wrong with FFX. I think it ranks in the top three, and is my personal favorite
Whenever people ask this question, I can never understand why some would recommend FFVII, VIII, or IX since these are hard to find and expensive to get.
So I always recommend the most reasonable solution, and that is to either buy FFX or FFX-2 and try out FFXII if they wanted to. Why? Because they're cheap (under $15 used), easy to find (sold by the tons at every Gamestop/EB/Game Crazy) and solid games. You should try the PS2 Final Fantasies since you can find them anywhere for real cheap. FFX and FF-X2 are very good for noobies.
Then you can also check out FFIV, V, VI on the GBA or FFIII and IV for the DS if you want old school Final Fantasy.
If you get lucky and find FFVII, VIII, or IX, then by all means, play them. But they're not easy to come by and they're expensive even used.
VI is probably the best summation of the series. It pushes the hardware of the system it was on, it included a moving soundtrack, the gameplay was accessible but deep, the quest was very long and the story was moving. It's also worth buying a DS/GBA so you can play the GBA version.
Failing that, X is probably the next best summation/access point. I personally prefer VIII slightly, but X is a terrific game nonetheless.
Also, do get Persona 3 as well. Not a Final Fantasy game, but better than a lot of them. Not all... but many.
Hmmm...the good old question.I think that all titles are different egnough to say "choose the one that looks like what you want".I personally whouldn´t buy FFVIII,FFX,FFX-2 or FFXII because they had been the not most brilliant titles in the series for me.But hey, exept FFX-2 they´re all not bad games.Just watch a bunch of Videos and look which theme you like.By the way, keep your hands off Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles or any Spin-offs exept Final Fantasy Tactics(the PS1 original is still my favourite RBS)...they´re all crap.
I too am a n00b to the series: 5 days ago I started playing FFX. Its fine I guess, but seeing as the only other JRPG I have ever played is Lost Odyssey, I need to check Gamefaqs from time to time to help solve a puzzle or kill a boss.
Otherwise its fine: the graphics are fairly nice actually and the story involving. I think people argue between FFVII, IX and X as to which has the best story, but if you aren't a huge fan of Playstation 1 graphics then X would be obviously best.

No, only VII is expensive. VIII and IX are not. And not hard to find on the internet.
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 9
On the PS2, starting on FFX is a great idea. I personally don't like FFX-2 but you can play it for the story, if you want to know more about FFX and characters. Then play FFXII.
But actually, you really should start FFVII (PS1) first because it's the most popular installment in the franchise. After that, play 8 and 9 on the PS1. Then check out the old school ones, they're all over the handhelds, just search for them. They are all good but a bit harder than the new ones.
My favorite from the series is FFVIII. If you like that modern feel that is very much related to our world, then you'll love it. It's slow at first but it gets better.
I also agree with those who say FFX 10, it was my first, it is easy to find, and it will give you a good feel for most of the games in the series.
People seem to fail to realize that FF, FFII, FFIV, FFV, and FFVI were also on the PSOne, which can be played on the PS2. I personally would go with FFVI because it is probably the best in the series prior to the PS2 FF's. The best thing is that you can pick up both FFV and FFVI in Final Fantasy Anthology for $20. FFIV comes with Chrono Trigger for $20 as well in Final Fantasy Chronicles. Go to amazon for these games.
Here, I'll even link them to you.

FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, and FFXII are also $20. You can easily pick up all the FF's on the PS2 with the exception of FFIII and FFVII because of one only being on the DS and the other being way overpriced, respectably.
None of them are hard to find, and if you look, none need to be expensive. People just mark them up because people will pay. Suikoden 2 may be worth $100, but FFVII is not. IX is actually still in production, you can get copies with the square-enix logo on them.
As for where to start, I guess you could start with FFX. But, being a fan of the series, I want you to enjoy it, and X is the worst in the series. I'm going to say start off with VII. It is not the best in the series, as some would have you believe, but it is still a high quality game. Afterwards, play IX, my 2nd favorite, as it is very fun.
I highly reccomend VI, what I consider to be the series' high point, as well as V, which can be very addicting.
VIII can also be REALLY easy if you figure it out. You'll either be confused the whole way through, or your characters will be lvl 99 beasts within one day.
Oh, and LongWay2Go, I have to disagree. FFVIII does not start out slow, it starts off AMAZING, before slowly tearing it self to shreds. Disc 2 was the worst thing that ever happened to that game.
I'm gonna say FFX, because its one of the easiest ones to play, and I think will be a good way to learn about Final Fantasy in general. FF7-9 are good games, but trying to learn the game while juggling the ATB may not be the best way to start.
One thing to note, all FF games pretty much have different systems for leveling up, and that seems to be the casue for a lot of people to either like the game or not. Some have job systems, there's sphere grid (FFX), materia (FF7), and the love it or hate it junction system (FF8).
But as far as ease of play and getting into the series, FFX is your best bet.
Final Fantasy 10 is my all time favorite. I never played 1-6 and I never want to. I'm not an archaeologist who want's to go digging up dinosaurs.

Good call, I'd actually suggest IV or MAYBE VI. If you're just trying to get your feet wet, IV is good place to start. There's very little complicated customization, the story is awesome and the characters are intriguing. I'd say you're hard pressed to find a more accessible pick up and play FF game.

What a pitiful way of thinking. Truly the only way in which X outdoes any of its predecessors is graphically. It's character customization and battles were all dumbed down, and its story is just not as good. I am saddened that you will never experience the shining points of the series.
Oh, and as for starting with IV, the game is difficult, so it may not be the best for a beginner.
Personally I loved FFVIII, and it was the first in the series I really played. FFX was also pretty good. FFVII, while people hold it up as the greatest RPG ever made, in my opinion is just ok. To me it is overrated, as I found myself struggling to stay interested about half-way through disc 2, it wasn't as emotional as people made it out to be, and isn't worth the $80+ you'll pay for a used copy off of Ebay or Amazon. I recently moved and lost my copy of FFVIII so I went to buy a new one for $20 at my local K-Mart as part of the Greatest Hits collection, and I'm sure FFX isn't that expensive anymore.
