I had a conversation with a bloke the other day, and we were talking about the greatest consoles of all time. Some had some odd choices, but i could see how one would think as such. So what consoles that you don't particularly like that much could you see someone claiming is the best of all time? Here are some systems that people claimed were the best of all time during the conversation i had: Super Nintendo Atari 2600 ColecoVision Turbo16(U.S. library only) Sega Saturn 3DO Virtual Boy (It's pretty much a console guys.) Intellivision VC 4000/Audiosonic Astrocade PS PS2 Xbox Sega CD(alone) Genesis Creativision Dreamcast Arcadia NES( Recently added by sixringz1) Since we is a group of pals, yes each has played most of the systems, so it was an interesting experience.

I hear the SNES quite a bit, also PS2 gets a lot of love in this way. I hear XBOX as well, when modding is taken into account.

Another console I forgot to add was the Xegs, and I have to agree as to how one would see it. 36 Unique games, and the whole BC with the *-bit computer line on your TV screen equaling hundred of games. It was planned in 85, so dare I say, I wished they would have released that instead of the 7800. It would have been a big hit.

I question any list that does not have the NES at or near the top. Yet your list doesn't have it at all.

A lot of people don't have your same opinions. Each of that list was a different person. Everyone is different, and I know this because I am a Dr. :) So what reasons do you put the NES on top my buddy? Then i can put it on the list.

It was the introduction to some of the most historical franchises in the history of video games. There are plenty other reasons but that alone is enough to have it up near the top. Doesn't have to be number one by any means but you listed nearly 20 consoles and it wasn't one. Just a little surprising. But hey you're entitled to your opinion. If you, or the people you talk to think the sega cd and virtual boy are worthy of being mentioned as possibly the best consoles of all time and the NES isn't, that's cool

Again, each console is someone else s opinion, I have not even put in the console I think is the greatest. A lot of people don't find NES games particularly good or fun to go back and play. The virtual boy was a failure but you should have seen how she stressed how good the system was in terms of gameplay. Everyone has an opinion.

I tend to think that anyone who claims Master System or older are the best of all time is overwhelmed with nostalgia and not in touch with reality.

I can understand SNES or Megadrive or things like the Amiga being idolised from other people's perspectives, but older systems from the 80's are stepping stones to the future. They were a necessary step to get to the next stage of console evolution, not the be-all to end-all and those that came after -even just in the next generation- completely wipe the floor with them in every regard.

Interesting, so you believe basically, that once consoles got to the transition stage, those were the ones you would feel be in touch with reality? Like say, you can see the SNES and GENESIS being claimed as the greatest right? After that, it went to mainly 3d gaming, so would you consider people who think the PSX, N64, and Saturn are also out of touch with reality, but the PS2, Xbox, and GC you could see as being the best from another perspective since the next transfers to HD?

No, just the early ones which represent gaming "finding its feet". Later systems all had some form of draw because of their greater capabilities. And controllers.

So basically 4th generation and above? (maybe late 3rd for computers)?
