I am that old (hehe gt!), but truthfully definitely some of the games (mainly frogger) on the atari definitely got me started on gaming as everyone time I visited family they always got the atari out for me to play around with! Then I got my very own Nintendo, and Metroid really put me over the top of consistently playing video games considering I now had a console at my own home!
A bunch of games back on the Atari. I remember Frogger, Pitfall and River Raid were some of my favourites. There were many others but I was very young at the time so I don't really remember them that well.
I'm not as old as this, but I started gaming back in 1977, a few months shy of 7, with the Coleco Telstar model that had all of four variations of Pong--tennis, hockey, jai alai, and handball.
I never owned my own gaming console until I was about 10 (I'm 19 now). My first console was the N64 and I got Goldeneye, Mario Kart and Super Mario 64.
But I'd always played games at friends houses on PC and SNES including Donkey Kong, Zelda, Stargate, GTA, Doom, Starcraft, Total Annihilation, C&C (original, Tiberium Sun, RA, RA2) so it's hard to say what 'started me off' but my first console definately kept me going.
Sonic the Hedgehog was what really started it off, though Shining Force got me hooked on RPGs. I think the first game i played though was Lemmings on a spectrum, now i feel old...
Super Mario World. I didn't know how to play it since I was only 4, but I loved Yoshi, and making him eat the cherries on the first level for some reason. :)
Geez.....I think it was some type of flight simulator on a commadore computer back in the day. But, in the more modern era of games, it would be super mario brothers on nintendo. I just got myself an Xbox 360 and am blown away with how far gaming has come (yeh its been a while), of late i'm very impressed with Halo 3, Gears of war and my fav so far...fallout 3.
So what game started me off "recently", and made me buy a 360, that would be Halo 3.
Sonic 2 for Sega Genisis because it came as a bundle. I was like 5 and I felt I was so good at the game because all I had to do was hold the d-pad right and occasoinally jump :P
DOOM at the age of 4 or 5 got me into gaming, but my two other favorite genre originators would be Command and Conquer at about the same time and, well Oblivion was the first RPG video game I played but what got me into RPGs is Dungeons and Dragons.
