i pose this question because i've been playing the original crackdown to get a feel for the game before i bought crackdown 2. i was really surprised at how smart and sometimes challenging the AI was in the game. the enemies take cover, they dodge my bullets but the smartest thing i've seen them do is when i try to drive and hit them with a car they always "smartly" move out of the way instead of just being an easy target.

I'm curious to know what games you think have smart or challenging AI.

Company of Heroes. They always at according to the situation. The AI isn't like the classic bots that either rush or turtle, but estimate whether it's good or not to attack, set ambushes and attacks you from behind.

FEAR, i still have to find a FPS with better AI (then again, i don't play FPS), i like how in FEAR, enemies weren't just targets, they feel very real.

Far cry 2. They work as a team and build a circle around you to close all your escape points and take you out with very agressive attacks. Thats hard in a sandbox game. Also they invetagate noise, run away from fire and get inside vehicles and shase you, not many fps do that. I once knocked someoen down and he crawled inside a hut with his handgun ready to shoot me. Last stand pek FTW  Or should i speak about carrying their buddies from point a to point b?

For its time... Quake 2. Enemies dodging out the way was mind-blowing stuff in 1997.

Borderlands doesn't fare too badly with its AI.

Hit a NPC with a corrosive round, he'll run and take cover, even though he's slowly dissolving.

For it's time, Turok 2 had some of the best AI around. They would take cover and evade fire, run away if you had a powerful enough weapon, self-destruct sometimes when low on health, and reacted to damage appropriately.
