With the release of The Walking Dead season 3 just recently it got me thinking… (like I don’t do enough of that right?).

The Telltale games are almost completely story driven games. As such their character development as well as focus on narrative are some of the best in the industry, regardless of whether one cares for the games or not (Quantic dreams is another developer brought up in this kind of a conversation.).

One thing the Telltale games (specifically TWD) have always done extremely well in my opinion is made me RREEEAAALLLYYYY regret some decision I’ve made in the past later on in the game. Remember that abandoned car of food and supplies in TWD season 1? .... Yeah, lol… Needless to say when that decision played out later on in the game I wanted to immediately stop, reload a previous save, and choose an alternative choice despite it probably not making a huge change in the story at that point.

Other examples of choices that may leave someone feeling like they did the wrong thing are deciding on who to allow to live or die. In the back of your head you are always left wondering how things might have played out differently.

Any point in any game that made you really regret your past decisions? (And yeah, HAR HAR, there are some past games that have made me regret things… like buying them lol.).

Digimon All Stars Rumble is the only digimon game that has ever made me regret loving digimon. I legitimately hated digimon for the duration of that entire game. And the achievements were bullshit.

I had a couple regrets in Until Dawn.

Shame every time a party member dies. :(

@videogameninja: Hmm, normally iv never regretted buying a game. Since i tend to stick to games and genre that has peaked my interest.

But 3 games lately have been so bad that i refunded 2 of them and the last one if i could i would have thrown right back also.

Watch Dogs, No man's Sky and Rollercoaster Tycoon world

The last 2 was probably the worst pile of shit ever to cross my path. Particular Tycoon World, how any developer with the backing they got can mess up that much is unbelievable. And makes me question what ever happened to pride in your work.

I think the OP is asking more about choice branches in the games, and having them be compelling enough that you are invested in, and can regret, the choices you made over the course of the game. The only time that's happened with me was in TW2 - the game has some pretty interesting branches and at the end I felt like I could have gone a different path and would have been more satisfied. Sadly, most games don't even have such a feature - they have one outcome regardless of what you do (which is often fine, but especially in RPGs the power of choice over the story arc shouldn't be overlooked!)

Spot on. That's more of what I meant but hearing some of the other members insights into what games "burned" them is quite amusing. I know myself that I, even though it has been rare, have been let down a few times by a newly purchased game.

OMG that game was another perfect example of what I was talking about. Constantly too. Who you gave what item/weapon to, who you decided to take the reigns and go check out uncertain areas, heck even just deciding whether to obtain certain objects, it all made you second guess yourself.

How many people ended up dying when you finished? Think I only had 1 (still can't figure out how I managed that lol.).

Hmm, missed that part.

But there the answer is easy, i never regret a decision , and if i did it´s not hard to reload the save or replay it.

None to be honest, had issues with character build if anything.

Certain games are just outright badly designed in that they prefer one class over another - for example a thief class in Two Worlds II is almost useless...

In other cases it's just fun to experiment without having to replay the game.

Most AARPG Diablo style games let you respect as you please.

I believe two games which have let me regret the decision I took or decisions was Heavy Rain.

I kept replaying multiple times Heavy Rain in order to have an ending that will make me feel satisfied and this how it is supposed to be. However, the decisions I have made to different scenarios are quite hard for me to accept and forced me to like just cancel this play through and start over.

Beyond Two Souls had a similar impact but I didn't feel any regret in the decisions I have made through out the game.

Now that you mention it, I kind of feel the same way.

There were still a lot of moments in beyond 2 souls where the decisions you made impacted the flow of the narrative but I think that they were more focused on telling a story that had certain milestones and markers in order for the tale to move forward and eventually wrap up. As such there weren’t as many “smaller” decisions that ultimately impacted the end result.

Heavy rain on the other hand you’re right about. There were many times I wanted to reload a save due to a frazzled decision I made during some kind of anxiety induced moment. The time sensitive decisions always got to me lol. Heavy rain might actually go down as the one true game where everything you did impacted something unless I’m missing one.

Persona 4 Golden definitely did. Luckily the most drastic consequences for the choices you make in that game happen fairly soon after the fact so I was able to go back and give it another go without losing too much time. Great game. Just thinking about it is making me excited for 5.

Probably something in Fallout 4. What my answer I click on and what my character says is two completely different things sometimes, which made me say things I didn't want to. Very annoying. If I'll ever play that game again, I'm downloading the mod that makes the written reply match with the spoken one.
