Before the release of games like Soul Caliber IV, Street FIghter IV, and Tatsunoko VS Capcom fighters were in a bad place.
Can you think of a single genre that is doing horrible?

JRPGS. They're becoming stagnant, and not showing much originality. It's 2010, and they still play like JRPGs of the 1990's. A lot of people are jaded by the JRPGs, and want something new. Bioware made a comment saying something to the effect of that JRPGs aren't evolving, and I agree. I love JRPGs, but there needs to be a change if JRPGs are going to continue to do well.
JRPGs of the past were a lot more difficult and D&D like. More to the way of stats and strategy. Now a days their very watered down and mainstream, story lines or redundant and dialogue is weak. Either JRPGs need to reinvent themselves or they have to go back to the way they were but that would end up alienating the mainstream.JRPGS. Have to say Music Genre. Outside of Rock Band 2, there isn't much reason to get any other music game.
He He He. My favorite genre actually. Flight sims......
I have Flight Simulator X, X-Plane 9, Pacific Fighters plus Combat Flight Simulators 2 and 3. Not too many. But that's okay. The shelf life of a typical flight sim is measured in years. CFS2 came out in 2000 and I still play it (runs great in Win 7).

None that I can call horrible. Adventure games sure aren't what they used to be and probably don't draw as much money.

Actually, I have some hope for Adventure games with the release of a lot of DS and Wii titles, as well as Heavy Rain. I think that, as gamers continue to ask for more story and unconventional gameplay, and as the "gaming generation" reaches middle-age, we're going to start to see an adventure game revival soon. As for JRPGs, I completely agree. Music games have Guitar Hero. As for JRPGs? Not even the Final Fantasy brand name carries any weight anymore. Did you hear the almost global yawn when FFXII got released? Taking their little "break" last generation was an extremely stupid thing to do, from a marketing perspective. Furthermore, modern JRPGs are just an attempt to do something (slightly) original to attract OUR attention, while at the same time catering to a Japanese market that wants the same thing over and over. I think Demon's Souls won GOTY just for the amazing step forward it represents: A Japanese RPG that doesn't secretly want to be Final Fantasy.agreed i never liked them they are good for 5 mins but then useless and give little insentive to play they also realase so many veriations of the same game (guitar hero im looking at you)I think that music games like gh and rb are starting to get old to people. They are to me for sure. i wouldn't be suprised if they just fade out soon.

i also think anything out of japan is a waste of time and the DS is full of so much crap i would pay to have them get rid of it
the nintendo wii is so bad i would rather gouge my eyes out then then play that ridiculous garbige nintendo is bad and has always been shocking and cheap in my eyes i hope to see them perish but that simply wont happen i would like to see microsoft sony and The PC demolish that dam maggot nintendo as they have already done to seaga
my opinion destroy me if you must.
Ya Wii sucks this year, they are only releasing Mario, Zelda, and Metroid all in one year...i also think anything out of japan is a waste of time and the DS is full of so much crap i would pay to have them get rid of it

Brawlers are pretty much dead on arrival. The most glaring beacon of hope is next week's Yakuza 3, which will be awesome, but other than that the genre has next to nothing on the horizon.

Yeah, at least the most traditional ones. In a way though, I kind of view games like DMC as the natural, single-player focused progression of the genre.
Where would you put great games like Bayonetta and Madworld and No More Heroes? They are pretty much beat em ups which is pretty close to a brawler. If that is what you mean by Brawler then they are doing pretty good as a genre.Brawlers are pretty much dead on arrival. MadWorld could certainly be considered a brawler (Beat-em-up) but Bayonetta? Not so much.
By brawler I am specifically talking about games that evolved from Double Dragon, Final Fight and Streets of Rage; fighters where you take on multiple enemies using martial arts or weaponry. Contemporary examples include The Warriors, Yakuza, Watchmen: End is Nigh, Castle Crashers, and GodHand.
Games like Bayonetta, DMC, etc. certainly contain elements that make them similar to brawlers but I would still classify them as more action/adventure. Out of all the more recent action titles I think the one that most resembles a true beat-em-up is Heavenly Sword.
Brawlers have a distinctive flavor and they have become few and far between. However, I think you and Atomic Tangernine may be correct in asserting that action games like Bayonetta and DMC have essentially taken over the genre despite offering up a very different type of experience.
Guitar Hero did ruin the music genre with their 8 games a month.
Rock Band at least still releases quality, Beatles Rock Band ruled...to bad the next in line is lame Green Day.
Crimtmp
They are basically the same exact game with a different name. It simply comes down to what people enjoy listening too. There are probably many who are excited for Green Day Rockband. not me though but that is how the music genre is at this point.
My genre that is lacking is platformers. Other than Mario and Ratchet there is nothing much on home consoles. Not concerned about handhelds which I barely even turn on.

Ya just wanted to clear that up as it can be gray sometimes. I think Bayonetta, DMC, and GoW are action games, LoZ being a true action adventure game.Hmm, some interesting opinions here. I fear I will be prosecuted for my choice, but remember, it's just opinion. I think WRPGs haven't been doing well lately. Many state that JRPGs are the ones stagnating, refusing to evolve, but to me, it's the complete opposite. There's been little in terms of novel components (once again, IMO). That's my two cents, anyway.
Music Genre. Considering the only music games coming out are Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and there getting old. They need to make a gitaroo man 2! lol.
i agree with this one...Easily the music genre. Rock Band and Guitar Hero were WAY too overmilked. Now people are sick of them.

Flight sims of course. Microprose used to churn out flight sims on the Amiga, since the PC became the dominant computer flight sims died down pretty fast. These days all we get is extreme arcade styles ones and even they are rare.
[QUOTE="Rumble_Stud"]It would not be anything like the original. A 3d version of old beat em ups become even less about technique and more about mashing.Beat-Em Ups. Damn near kill for a modernized Double Dragon. On the 360 or PS3 would look nice!

Yup, look at all the Ninja Turtle games. Something about them being in 3D just kind of ruins it. Not that there is no such thing as a good 3D beat em up. No More Heroes 1 and 2, and God Hand stick out to me. I just played the demo of Yakuza 3, and surprisingly really enjoyed it. May need to get the first 2 of those.
Reading this thread it seems like all the genres are dying out. I think we're just seeing less great games overall. And the ones that really stick out REALLY stick out. A lot of genericness, but also a lot of real, true Greatness. Just a lot more genericness. I think some people here are confusing evolution of a genre with dying of a genre.
Survival Horror is a genre that is not evolving in a good way. And before someone mentions dead space, I'll let you know, I wasn't a fan. I am really hopeful for that Suda 51's and Shinji Mikami's (director of RE4) game will revive the genre.

Namco's Urban Reign did a pretty damn good job making a traditional beat em' up that required more than button mashing, although almost nobody played it and the critics couldn't wrap their heads around the game.

Regardless of your personal affinity, Dead Space was actually a survival horror game rather than an action game with horror elements. It required a more methodical approach to combat, forced the player to utilize resource management, and used the atmosphere to illicit tension. I personally loved the game and I think it was a far greater success for the genre than RE5.
