Which has the better sports games, shooting games, rpgs, action, adventure, puzzle, etc.

Does the SNES excel in more genres? Does the Genesis?

We can start with rpgs, that seems to be an area the SNES is widely recognized in, and with the Genesis I would say Arcade shmups.

I don't think one can argue that MegaDrive had better sports games and for me personally it had better beat em up, Shmups and platformers. Games like Streets of Rage, Alien Storm, Golden Axe, Sonic, Ristar, Taz Escape from Mars, Aladdin, Rambo III, ESWAT etc. Simply quality.

SNES definitely had the upper hand when it came to RPG's, mainly because they had Square on their side. As for the Genesis, I thought that it did beatemups better.

Snes had Rpgs Action-RPGS Platformers Adventure and action adventure on lock

I cannot think of one game on mega drive that is in the same genre as secret of evermore and secret of mana.

Simcity hands down had simulation under control if not that then utopia an populus.

For racing games few were on the level of mario kart but I bet sega has some racers in junction with eachtoher that match its quality

Gradius 3 and un squaddron are the best shottem ups.

I dunno so many genres to compare.

Lets see, without putting too much thought into it -

SNES

RPGs (numbers and quality is much higher)

Puzzle games (Genesis UBER sucks for puzzle games)

Platform games (higher numbers, more titles have battery back-up)

Racing games (Mode 7 added another level to these games before true 3D)

Japanese strategy games/strategy-RPGs

Genesis

Scrolling shmups (so many, there are hoards, SNES sucks for vertical scrollers especially)

Sports games

Run N' Gun games

Western strategy games

Arcade action (games like Shinobi III for instance)

Arguable

Beat-em-ups

Fighting games

Adventure games

how are beat-em-ups and fighters arguable?

I think the genesis clearly wins the first one and the SNES clearly wins the second one

Mainly with fighting games its just because I can't think of any 4 player SNES games like Makyo Toitsusen (though there are a few other plus points, Samurai Shodown is better on Genesis, the 6-button pad is pretty cool for fighting games too, though probably a little overstated sometimes, Eternal Champions is a pretty challenging, and feature rich game)

For Beat-em-ups the Genesis has the best one (Streets of Rage 2), and the quirky ones (Comic Zone, Splatterhouse 3), but SNES definitely has the numbers, there are loads of polished beat-em-ups there, Ghost Chaser Dansei, Turtles in Time, Batman Returns, Final Fight 3, Knights of the Round, Kinf of the Dragons, Captain Commando, Gourmet Sentai: Barou Yabou, Iron Commando, Ninja Warriors, Rushing Beat Shura, Sonic Blastman series, Undercover Cops etc.

Really, the SNES sucks for shmups? You should try some of these:

  • Aero Fighters
  • Axelay
  • Darius Twin
  • Gradius III
  • Phalanx
  • R-Type III: Third Lighting
  • Raiden Trad
  • Super R-Type

That's not to say it's better, per se, than the Genesis's selection of shmups. I'm just saying that the SNES's line-up doesn't suck. Genesis's is just as good, IMO, from what I've played of it:

  • Bio-Hazard Battle (I reluctantly add this one, it's unique visually, but the gameplay is kinda meh)
  • Lightening Force
  • MUSHA
  • Raiden Trad
  • Thunder Force 2 & 3
  • Super Thunder Blade
  • Whip Rush

My personal opinion is that the shmups belong in the "Arguable" category. Oh, and I don't like the cute-em ups, so while Fantasy Zone games may do it for some shmup fans, they don't for me.

actually when it comes to numbers, I think the Genesis would win, three streets of rage games, two golden axe games, comix zone, the punisher, growl, two crude dudes, TMNT hyperstone heist, Double Dragon, Battletoads, splatterhouse 3, Alien Storm, mazin wars, Mystical Fighter,

Three Final Fight Games, Knights of Round, X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, Marvel Super-Heroes: War of the Gems, TMNT Turtles in Time, Super Double Dragon, Double Dragon V, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, MMPR The Movie, Batman Returns, Ninja Warriors, Maximum Carnage, Separation Anxiety, Death & Return of Superman.

Just like I said about the shmups, I feel the SNES and the Genesis beat-em ups belong in the "Arguable" category.

Both systems have excellent exclusives in each genre that make them both worth owning. That said, I played a lot more games on the SNES.

  • R-Type III: Third Lighting

Emerald_Warrior

Most of those games suffer from some pretty irritating slowdowns. Super R-Type is unplayable for me because of that.

The Genesis has always ben regarded as a shmup machine, right up there with the Turbografx 16 and the Saturn. I don't know how this can possibly be arguable.

  • Thunderforce III
  • Thunderforce IV
  • Air Buster
  • Musha
  • Trouble Shooter
  • Battle Mania Daiginjou
  • Elemental Master
  • Eliminate Down
  • Gaiares
  • Phelios
  • Gley Lancer
  • Forgotten Worlds
  • Sagaia (Darius II)
  • Truxton
  • Sol-Deace
  • Wings of Wor
  • Granada
  • Whip Rush
  • Fire Shark
  • Dangerous
  • UndeadLine
  • Twin Hawk
  • Panorama Cotton
  • Steel Empire
  • Vapor Trail: Hyper Offence Formation
  • Biohazard Battle

All of these are of high quality, and polished to perfection. Check some youtube vids and reviews. And this is besides the SEGA-CD addon which has a small chunk of fantastic shoot 'em ups aswell (this is a incredibly underrated add-on by the way).

You can call the SNES better/equal in a lot of genres comparable to the Genesis, but shoot 'em ups? That's just beyond ridiculous. The Genesis is a shmup machine, the SNES is simply not.

It's not equal, it's not better. It simply sucks as a shmup machine compared to the Genesis.

those three games are also on the Genesis.

also, good thing you mentoned Power Rangers, I forgot to add that one on the Genesis list (it's a different game, but it's closer to a typical beat' em up then the SNES one)

I've played all of this junk already

  • Aero Fighters - Mediocre
  • Axelay - Great Game
  • Darius Twin - Mediocre, and Genesis has is own trash Darius games
  • Gradius III - Runs like a slideshow
  • Phalanx - This ones ok
  • R-Type III: Third Lighting - awesome
  • Raiden Trad - abysmal port of Raiden with huge sections of levels missing
  • Super R-Type - Cut and shut hackjob of R-Type 2 with missing checkpoints and constant slowdown

You forgot

  • Super Aleste/Space Mega Force - Excellent vertical scroller (the only one on SNES)
  • Parodius Da! - Slowdown is at a minimum

I've been having problems for ages, couldn't even view the page for like the last hour.

Half of my post was coming out as HTML, I just deleted everything in the affected area.

and thats not including how many "timed out" and "bonk" announcements I've gotten in the past few days

You've got them backwards. The Genesis Power Rangers game is a straight fighting game. While the SNES game is a beat-em up.

You are a harsh judge, man. I enjoyed all those games. But like I said, I enjoyed the games on the Genesis list too. However after seeing Lucianu's list, I see there are a lot of shmups on Genesis I need to check out.

About Raiden Trad in particular: I definetly prefer the SNES version. You're right about the Genesis version being the better port, visually at least. You even get the little cows moving around on the land below. But I can't stand the sound on the Genesis version. It sounds like the entire game was recorded in a tin can. If I could, I'd have the Arcade version. But I don't have that much dough. I played the heck out of the arcade at a local pizza joint in my town all the time.

To be fair Aero Fighters probably isn't quite a bad as I made out, it should've probably been in the middle area, it does have 2-player after all, even though the sound quality is horrific.

However after seeing Lucianu's list, I see there are a lot of shmups on Genesis I need to check out.Emerald_Warrior

The Genesis games which were blatantly absent from your list were -

Horizontal

  • Battle Mania Daiginjou (Trouble Shooter 2)
  • Gley Lancer
  • Eliminate Down
  • Gaiares (this is hard as hell)
  • Air Buster

Vertical

  • Elemental Master
  • Fire Shark
  • Truxton (hard as hell)
  • Phelios

You should probably spend some time with those games, there are tons of others as well, but those tend to be the more well respected titles, afterwards it might be worth checking out -

  • Wings of Wor
  • Steel Empire
  • Hellfire
  • Zero Wing

and

  • Verytex
  • Dangerous Seed
  • Undeadline
  • Grind Stormer

About Raiden Trad in particular: I definetly prefer the SNES version. You're right about the Genesis version being the better port, visually at least. You even get the little cows moving around on the land below. But I can't stand the sound on the Genesis version. It sounds like the entire game was recorded in a tin can.Emerald_Warrior

I completed the SNES Raiden on my first attempt, its ridiculously easy as its missing out huge sections of the levels.
