I remember back when I was a little kid, I couldn't wait for fridays. Not becaue of the weekend but physicly going down to the movie store, and renting either a videogame or movie. I love seeing the case of some certain game, and looking on the back of the case, seeing all the pictures. Now, kids don't get that joy. They can just stay in their homes, rent a movie or game, or steaming movies.

Believe me, I used to feel that way when I was younger. I would rent my videogames at Blockbuster (which was the hottest place to rent anything at the time during the 90s) or at a local rental store that wasn't big. It was great to just look at the back of the cover and wonder what the game was about and how it was going to play. Nowadays, I don't rent games because I prefer to have them and play them anytime I want without having to take it out for days and days on end.

Yeah true about having them to play anytime, but we was little kids, and didn't have money to buy games. Plus, we didn't have gamestop to buy used, cheap games. The only place I recalled that was close to gamestop was funcoland. That was a hour drive for me, and my parent hardly ever go up there.

I used to love going down to Blockbuster and renting movies. I dunno, that time has just passed I guess. Both Blockbusters in our town have gone out of business. Now it's just Netflix streaming and getting the red envelope in the mail.

I never did rent games though. There was a time I'd go to the store and pick out a game based on the cover art. That, um...didn't usually result in very good purchases. But I enjoy researching games on the itnernet and then finally deciding to hit the order button at Amazon.

Anyone remember the Blockbuster championships back in the middle 90s? You could compete in two games, Donkey Kong Country and NBA Jam Tournament Edition. If you win the local competition, your reward was you renting 24 games, two games each month, free for the entire year. I know because I was a winner in such a compeition. Man, those were awesome times! :D

Those were good times, always went down to Blockbuster and picked up a game or a few movies. Times are changing, people can get those things digitally now.

Seriously? I really liked the Mom and Pop shops so much better. They even let me keep a tab (I would pay it off every Saturday) and went out of their way to drop off brand new games they got in to me at my house as they were going home for the night. You can not beat service like that.

I still go to Blockbuster pretty frequently. I checked out some really bad horror movies before Halloween and ended up signing up for their $15 a month unlimited rentals plan. I've used that to play Battlefield 3, FEAR 3 and Uncharted 3.... saves a lot of money as I would have been very disappointed had I actually purchased any of those games. :P

I really miss those days. We had a few mom and pop video stores around (we had Blockbuster but we always supported the small chains) and it was so exciting to go in and find new VHS and NES games to rent. You could rent games for up to 3 days for just 99 cents. Those days are long gone sadly. It's all streaming and digital downloads now.

Yea i remember having great memories at BlockBuster & Rogers.I would spend half an hour staring at the shelf of games, pick each one up a thousand times, read the back/manual & i never could make up my mind on what i want.

Blockbuster went under as far as i know. In this day in age Kids usually sit in party chat all day & play cod. I dont think they even play anything other than Cods MP nowadays. Kids of this generation arent gamers in the way we were. its a differenttime now. A time when you play one game a year, all you play is MP & you sit in party chat all day. Thats kid gamers for you. Thats what happened to renting games.

I used to love renting movies from Blockbuster or other renting stores (games not so much because I prefer owning them), but I don't know of any that are still in business around where I live... I've never been a fan of downloading or streaming movies, I'd much rather have a physical copy in my hand. At least I can buy used DVDs at certain stores.

They closed down over 3/4s of their locations, but they're still alive. Dish Network purchased them when they filed for bankruptcy.

I didn't go to blockbuster too often. When I was young, we didn't have one. And after a local Blockbuster opened, we still continued to rent from a local video store (Sydney video, named after the city we lived in at the time.) Now Blockbuster closed, and other video stores have closed. I live in the next town over now, but Sydney video is still around. And the one video store in the town I live is closing soon too. They just can't compete with Netflix.

But I used to rent games all the time on the weekends. There were some games I rented so many times that it would have been cheaper just to buy it... Earthworm Jim was one of those games. I owned the second, but I kept renting the first. Sonic 3 was another. I owned Sonic 2 and Sonic and Knuckles. I now own a digital copy of Jim though, as well as Sonic Mega Collection.

Well I pick up DVD's for $5 or less (of course not new releases). New releases Irent fromRed Box for $1 a night. I research my video game purchases first, so I really only end up buying AAA games or the rare great indie game, so I wouldnt just rent whatever came out that week, like I did when I was young. That is what happened. That said, I do remember being 12 years old and being excited for Friday to rent a movie and/or a video game for the night. Things just change.

Its like going to NFL games. Before I would always try to go to a few games a year, but now it costs over $200 (ticket, parking, beer, food, ect.) to go to one game. I would rather watch the game on my 67 inch TV at home.

What happened? $10/3 day rental happened.

The last time I went to rent a game at my local blockbuster I got to the register and they said; "that'll be $10". To which I responded; "What?, forget it".

It probably has to do with a lot of factors.

I was in the same boat as you when I was younger but now that I have a life and don't have the luxury of sitting around from Friday at 3pm until 8pm on Sunday playing games, I prefer to take a risk that the game isn't going to be great and buy it anyway because I'll be able to play it at my own pace.

As for children of the current generation not hiring games as much -- they're spoilt. :P Seriously though, parents are getting lazier and by purchasing the game instead of hiring it they can have their kids out of their hair during the week in addition to the weekend! :P
