In no particular order, for me....

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
Crysis (PC)
God of War II
(PS2)
BioShock (PC)
The Witcher (PC)

I would also add HL2: The Orange Box (PC), but to me that stands out for being an excellent package, rather then a wholly new released game.

Forgot to mention I can't wait for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Once it comes out it will be up there on the list.

P.S. Congratulations to markfoley94 on his first post.

  1. DJMAX Portable 2 (PSP)
  2. Portal (PC)
  3. Odin Sphere (PS2)
  4. Super Metroid (Wii)
  5. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii)

DJMAX P2, is easily the best music game I have played, period. It has massive replay value out the ass and such a large difficulty curve that anyone can play it. From those who are inexperienced with music games all the way up to Beatmania/DDR experts. The added fact that it is on the PSP and is completely portable seals the deal. It is easily the best video game to be released this year, hands down. The problem is, it is only available through import from South Korea. Of course, the PSP is region free so it really isn't that big of a issue.

PORTAL, is one of the most creative and strikingly original games I have ever played. It combines creative first person puzzle gameplay with a sense of humour you can find no where else. I would have payed entrance for the Orange Box just to get to play Portal alone and nothing else. Once the community starts releasing custom maps, the game is going to take on all new levels of quality.

ODIN SPHERE, from what I played of it (which was very little) it struck me as one of the most beautiful 2D games ever made. All the hand-crafted backgrounds and sprites just set off the game as unique. The gameplay itself is quite in depth, intriguing and the game is a challenge (from what a friend tells me) that I would nominate it for one of the top releases this year. I plan on picking it up in the near future and diving further into it.

SUPER METROID, released on the Virtual Console. Same game that was released back in 1994, just in a new form. The game today is still as good as it was back in the day and shames so many 2D action/adventures/platformers/shooters to come out since then. The game is awesome. You own a Wii, you download Super Metroid.

METROID PRIME 3: CORRUPTION, is one of the major standout releases for the Wii this year. It got so many things right. The controls, the atmosphere, the gameplay. It did however feel a little flawed. The voice acting was a welcome addition, however, Samus was not given a voice, yet throughout the Prime series, Jennifer Hale voiced her grunts and screams and throughout the Metroid series itself, Samus has had a "voice." Albeit a text based one. Nintendo played their cards all wrong when it came to not letting Retro give Samus a voice, she has already been developed as a non-silent protagonist, thanks mostly to Metroid: Fusion. Another disappointment about the game was the ending. The final boss battles were extraordinarily anti-climactic. They spent the previous two games building up to this ending and to just let it go off like it did kind of leaves a sour taste in your mouth. In the end though, it is a must-own Wii title, at least for those wishing to experience the best console shooting experience available.
