Contra crossed my mind aswell....2 up - 2 down - left - right - left - right - B -A - START !

Pretty much any old Nintendo game. They call it "Nintendo Hard" for a reason. I particularly remember Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden being pretty frustrating.

For more modern games, I'd have to say that SMT: Nocturne is way hard. There are some bosses in there that will wreck your ass if you give them even a sliver of a chance. Even the random battles are no joke at times.
