What is the most difficult game you have ever played? This question is asking about difficulty in relation to figuring things out such as puzzles in the game (take Legend of Zelda games for instance), not a game like Ninja Gaiden where the combat is extremely difficult but there are little to no difficult puzzles.

Any of the original Doom games (The Ultimate Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth or Doom II: Final Doom) on Nightmare difficulty. In everything but The Plutonia Experiment .wad (Final Doom), the games are actually pretty easy and enjoyable on Ultra Violence... but Nightmare is just masochistic.

I hear Ghouls and Ghosts for the NES is the hardest game ever.

not sure wat the right answer is....... so IMHO any of the gran turismos werent hard at all........ but just took so much time and effort to complete!! and any of the FF's were the same....... easy gameplay, but take ages!!

i think that RSLV or RSV2 are quick and easy to complete and if the offline story mode can be done wwithin a week, but if you play on the hardest difficulty it can really test ur skill level and is extremely difficult!!

I don't play many games with puzzles, but I have played a few. The puzzles in God of War were a little tricky for me.

Jagged Alliance 1 & 2 were really unbalanced difficulty on any setting, even on Easy. The game is the best turned based merc squad game ever made though. Getting shot just once could give permanent stat loss on a merc, it forced you to turn into a quick save before each turn type game, ruining the pace, and maybe some of the fun.

I'm torn between Chessmaster on high difficulty level and the original Gran Turismo.

Playing chess against a computer on above average difficulty is really difficult period because of the nature of the game, while Gran Turismo cost me a PlayStation and a few joysticks, all of which I smashed in anger of not being able to pass the game's license qualifications. I don't think I passed more than 60%. (later I realized that racing games just really, REALLY piss me off period and I'm not good at them anyway)

The original Castlevania kicked my ass in ways I could not imagine and because of that, I've never touched another entry in the series.

The funniest part of this thread is the fact that most of the people who posted obviously only read the thread topic and didnt actually read his post because he says he is looking for games that are mentally challenging (figuring out puzzles), not games where the action aspect is hard. He also goes on to specifically say not games like Ninja Gaiden. Epic fail!

Sonic The Hedgehog 2

I've completed the game only twice and it is one of the games I've played for the longest time ever.
