Because it's fun
because it's an escape from reality
because it connects me with people from all around the world
because I love participating in epic stories
among other reasons :D
I do it for the fun aspect.
But, then there is competitive gaming with my clan and that's just stressful unless you're well practiced with your team and you just destroy your opponent as if it were nothing. That in itself is a fun time as well.
I also play games to watch a story unfold and see how the story ends and what not. The writing in games is only improving as time goes by and some of these games are more well written then a series on television.
They're fun, they keep sad thoughts at bay and they're a form of art.Black_Knight_00
He has really good point. I remember right after my divorce, if I wasn't playing with my daughter and spending time with her, I could be found gaming it up. The games allowed me to keep my sanity and keep my thoughts away from the things that were going on in my life. I'm pretty sure that if it wasn't for games during that period that things would have been a lot different through that tough period for me.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I used games to overcome one of the worst sentimental breakdowns ever. Worked. Other people will use something else, but games are what we use.
Mainly for fun, entertainment , the usual reasons. But some games provide experiences that are more enjoyable then 'fun'. E.G. I played COD4 because the SP has captivating, immersive and well told. Same with Bioshock.
Another reason would also be getting out of the real world. In a game you can be something or someone completely different. A ninja, a race car driver. I guess it's a way to fulfil some of those 'I wanna be a superhero, ninja, race-car solider guy' fantasies we all had when we were 8.
I enjoy playing games for a strange reason: I just like to scrutinize all aspects of a game and try to understand how they all come together so seamlessly in a ever changing dynamic environment to create such an engrossing, enjoyable experience. Music chages relative to my actions, A.I. acts accordingly, and it's all cohesive and has to constantly adapt. That just amazesme, and the amount of work that goes into that process blows my mind. So, a large part of why I game is to appreciate them for the medium they are.
Oh yea, for fun as well. :)
