manhunt i guess isn't scary but it did make me jump alot i couldn't play in the darkFleeman6019Manhunt isn't scary?
Doom.... yes i know its not exactly scary, but play it when youre 5 like i did... all the demons really made me jump/scared
Manhunt was probably more scary though so either of them can be the scariest
I thought Condemned was horribly scary. I knew it was scary when I played it in broad daylight and friends in the room, and I was still freaking out at the slightest of noises.yokofox33I'll agree there. Comdemned is the only game Ive ever played where I dont want to progress further lol. Each new level bought more and more scares with it.
Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams. The scene with Pryamid Head and him mutilating some monster in a regridgerator while the main character is hiding in the closet was intense. Pryamid Head is just scary as hell when you first meet him. Had a hard time wondering around the apartment after that.
Honerable Mentions:
Dead Space: Not really scary, made me jump a few times.
Condemned: Criminal Origins: The atmosphere and such.. perfect. Jumped a few times... like the locker scene at the school. Could've have sworn he was dead.
Condemned 2: Bloodshot: The bear scene and the guy on the ship chasing ya. Intense.
Personally, I try to stay away from scary games, so my scariest is half life 2. And I'm probably going to get flamed for that. :(ramboturd72The fast zombies are actually among the scariest enemies in any game I've played. The game in itself isn't that scary, but they are.
The scariest game that I have EVER played? Hmm... I'd have to say NONE OF THEM! Seriously, with games like dead space, fatal frame, and silent hill rating as the top horror games, thats pretty sad because those games are not very scary. The only part on dead space that scared me was the very beginning where you had to run from the creatures that were chasing you. The only reason it scared me was because I didn't have a gun. And as for fatal frame and silent hill.. well those games are just way too repetative. I'm usually too busy trying to figure out where to go that I don't have time to be scared or even think about being scared. It gets old after a little while. I'd like to play a game that is actually scary to me. I've played a good bit of horror games, but not all of them. What I have played didn't quite cut it for me... at all. Anyone know of anything that could fit my taste in the horror genre?
Anyway, my answer is that I have NEVER played a scary game that scared me for over five minutes. I'm just waiting for the right one.

Have you played Condemned, Penumbra, and FEAR?

Indeed I have. Well, not Penumbra, but Condemned and FEAR yes. I did get a little freaked out on FEAR on the last couple levels though. That's probably the only part in a game that I've ever come close to just...not playing out of fear of it lol.Condemned really is not that scary. Once you figure out the relatively simple combat, you settle into a routine. Also, when you hear baddies, you come to check behind you first thing. In the end, it's just not scary any longer. To a lesser extent, the late game of Dead Space starts to be this way as well.Paladin_KingMan, don't get me started with Condemned. There are so many problems I have with that game...which I expressed fully in this blog entry.

The one game that I felt genuinely scared within was Siren, especially the original one, due to the fact that most of the characters in the game had no way of really defending themselves, so you had to resort to making sure you weren't detected by enemies. Similar to other smaller segments in games where you were vastly overpowered by even the most basic of enemies, segments in games where you are forced to flee without really being able to fight tend to come off as scarier than anything else. SIren just seemed to have more of that throughout the experience.Skylock00
Read your blog, and you sir, are now tracked :P Some of the levels are indeed a bit of a mess...and invisible walls? How about in those dark basements where you're struggling to see anything to begin with? While brainless enemies run headlong into you? For a launch title, i didn't have too many gripes with the game, but it really hasn't aged well. It gets really repetitive and combat settles into a routine groove.
I forgot to mention the taser as well. The taser removes so much of the fear from the game. With the taser, you basically become a god. No sense being scared about the guy who jumped at you out of nowhere...just taser him with the quick press of one button (you don't even have to cycle to the taser....it's always equipped) and he's gone from ambushing lunatic, to helpless, jittery mess that you are free to whale on. Rinse and repeat. The taser, though taking time to recharge, also helps you immobilize combatants when they gang up on you, so you no longer feel outnumbered.
The hair brained AI also lets you use the same strategy again and again: wait for them to attack. Step back. They swing at air...you race in for a clobber and step back again, repeat again, and again for the whole game. Why block?
I like what you said about Siren. I never really played it and only just picked up a hard copy of the new one, Blood Curse. Your description of Siren sounds very much like my description of Deception. I look forward to it...it appears we have similar in what constitutes a truly scary game :)
