as opposed to all the other cods with extremely deep gameplay
Never said they where it's just the last COD game I ever played I hated COD before it was cool to. I will never understand the love that COD4 gets it's influence destroyed alot of great series.
what great series did it destroy?
Battlefield, Medal of Honor, F.E.A.R. and Crysis sequels although you can mostly blame the last two examples on being consolized but COD dumbing down influence sure played a role. The Battlefield series is the greatest example of games destroyed by COD4 if you have play Battlefield 2 back in the day and see how the gameplay was slower pace and built on teamwork with no perks or regenerating health BS no gimmicks and now if you look at the new BF games of today it's basically COD with bigger maps and vehicles added. COD4 was a massive money success and other publishers saw the money so they dumbed down their games to appeal to the COD4 fans and that's when we started getting COD clone games. But hey I have nothing against people that like COD my problem is that it destroy other series in it's path maybe not intended but it started a horrible trend.
it's a bit unfair to say it destroyed a lot of great series. cod 4 was a pure cinematic arcade shooter, unrivalled in its delivery style at the time, and so spectacularly successful (and annually releasable) naturally it was influential, as you say.
but monolith have no-one to blame but themselves for fear. fear 2 was a short, shitty game with a senseless plot masquerading as a horror shooter. as the old saying goes - "repeatedly wheeling out a young faceless naked chick to create jump scares doth not a horror game make." fear 3 was even worse.
and crysis 2 was, as you say, more a victim of the platform than the game design, reduced more in scope and scale of the play area than the gameplay or the level length. i'd still take crysis 2's campaign all day long over black ops', it's nearest calendar based cod rival, which took linear gaming to a level of constriction never seen before, so tight and on rails it would make the uncharted games seem positively crysis-esque in comparison.
you're probably right about medal of honour, but the series was pretty much dead and buried after 07. battlefield's mp has definitely reduced in scope from the old days but i haven't played it in years so i can only really speculate.
anyway, it's all good, you're entitled to your opinion, but to me saying cod 4 is the worst game you've ever played because of the simplistic gameplay is a bit like complaining forza is crap because there's too much driving. sorry for picking you up on this stuff, but it's a more interesting discussion to me than what's been generated from this shit thread, with an op who immediately abandons ship never to be seen again every time he posts
