I dont know about you guys, but after I played Bioshock....every other FPS feels so generic in terms of gameplay as well as story. Sure Bioshock might not be dubbed as an FPS by some people. Even likes of Call uf Duty series, which prides itself for heavily well-done scripted events, it kinda feels very generic and boring at some time, especially during the 2nd playthrough.

As long as it doesn't suck, isn't broken, and last over 6 hours I'll be happy.

That was one of my major complains with COD 4, it was like half the length of an avg shooter.

So your expectations for FPSs has gotten higher?! Well that's a good thing but you got to accept games for what they are, not for what would make them better. I don't think games with stories as good as I hear BioShock has won't ever be common in games.

I meant expectation for the benchmark of a good FPS.

Oh well I expect almost no FPS to stand up to BioShock's story so all I expect from FPSs (besides a few things that make them stand out) is good weapons.

I could care less about the length of time it takes to beat the game as long as it delivered a memorable experience. Case in point -- Mirror's Edge took me 5 hours to beat, but I still can't stop playing it.

You know, I just love FPS, period. Man you have no idea the bad FPS I played (yesterday I finished Navy Seals 2, scored 1.6 on gamespot). Still, I know what you mean: when you've seen a great game it's hard no to compare the others to it. My trick is: have no expectations, don't believe the hype and don't get influenced before playing games. By the way, I just replayed the original Far Cry and had the time of my life. Amazing game.

I guess crysis does set the benchmark for FPS's not only is it fun but its also awesome looking and its been pulled off real well. Funny though now that i've played crysis and i was craving for an FPS, so i went back to playing the original FEAR and Condemned and it seemed so ugh ! i mean i cant believe i played through it once and gamespot even gave it a 9+, so yea i guess as more and more newer and newer FPS's come out i guess older ones do lose their charm. That said though i just played Riddick and that still seemed pretty solid......even Halo, so i guess maybe FEAR did suck and maybe we did buy into all the hype.

Riddick was an awesome game. One of the things I liked about it was the melee combat and movements felt so real.

From the genre I expect variety. From a particular game, I only expect what has been promised. That's why I'd label BioShock as a disappointment even though it's a great game. However, they promised a deep open-ended game with tough moral choices and they simply failed to deliver. On the flipside, games like Half-Life 2, Crysis and Team Fortress 2 delivered on everything they set out to do and then some.

I was playing Far Cry Instincts Predator today and I LOVE that game.

When it's half-length was quite a bit better than most full-length FPS you can't really complain. I was happy that they just didn't drag it out because that totally throws off pacing.

That there's a decent story, hopefully variety of weapons and downright fun to play. If they also have a atmosphere setting like Doom 3, Bioshock and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. then I love them even more.

first rule is to have very solid aiming. I cannot stress this enough. The reason why I can't stand Perfect Dark Zero is because the aiming was very wonky and loose. Many wonder why people keep buying Call of duty games and aside from them being solid games (even the Treyarch ones) the aiming is spot on. It doesn't get in the way of the experience one bit.

Good set pieces. Original and fun set pieces are what can really make or break an FPS, and it is what most FPS games rely on (Bioshock relies more heavily on it's story, but does have a few note worthy set pieces.) to provide excitement. Just look at Resistance 2, it's set piece crazy, and it's great fun, even if some of the standard gameplay feels a little dated (Though the great weapons and unique enemies help aswell).

A good FPS for me, has to have some great thing that sets it apart from other shooters. For example, even though almost every shooter out there has online play, Team Fortress 2's online is different because it is almost entirely team based and has unique character classes.

No AI bugs that absolutely ruin it Scripted events Characters Adventure, no repeating multi-colored stages that all look the same (I think that's well gone by that age by now though) Something that no other FPS has done before Well detailed characters Voice acting A good story Large open areas Feeling as though you actually are in control of EVERYTHING around you that is touchable. Even a can that can be thrown (or put into a trash can :D) Unique weapons Awesome animations (and reload animations)

It really depends on the game in general, I really don't go in there saying "this game better have online multiplayer or it sucks" or anything like that, I just want it to be good.

Nowadays it is something groundbreaking. There is enough mediocre stuff out there just rehashing what we've already seen... there are far less gems actually trying something new and taking risks... ala Mirror's Edge.

I hate to sound arrogant but... have you actually spent any time with shooters that came out before Halo?
