Sengoku Blade
I had purchased Radiant Silvergun on eBay for whatever it was going for at the time and I thought it was okay. Perhaps it had something to do with how much I paid forit. I did end up selling it for about what I paid, after beating it.
Wow! A lot of Cave love in this thread. I remember a couple of years ago you could never find someone on this site who played a Cave shmup. It really shows how their popularity has increased among collectors and gamers over the years.
My top-ten(with no particular order)
Radiant Silvergun (SAT)
Layer Section 2 (SAT, PS1, PSN)
Blazing Lazers (TG-16)
R-Type series (Arcade, multiple platforms)
Ikaruga (Dreamcast, Gamecube)
Truxton (Arcade, Genesis/Mega Drive)
Thunder Force series (Arcade, Genesis/Mega Drive, SAT)
Under Defeat (Dreamcast, PS3)
Lords of Thunder (Turbo-Duo)
Space Invaders (Arcade, multiple platforms)
Special mention to Gate of Thunder, that could be in Lords of Thunder place. People will often argue about which is better. I put Lords of Thunder on the list because of its fantasy atmosphere.
Lords of Thunder. Great 2D sprite graphics. I love the fantasy setting. And most of all, the soundtrack is easily one of the greatest in all of gaming. A guitar-driven metal soundtrack that gets you all fired-up and in the perfect mood for a shoot-em up.
I've also got to give some love to Star Soldier on the NES. I'm sure many people are thinking "what a mediocre game" as soon as I said that title. And I can't deny it. it's nothing special (but it's not bad either). The reason I wanted to mention it is that this was one of hte first games I got along with my NES way back in '87 or maybe '88., I was quite young. And the NES made me fall in love with gaming. So Star Soldier was my first taste of shoot-em ups (other than Space Invaders and Galaxian's single-screen experiences, of course). I immeadiately became a shoot-em up fan and have been ever since.
The Raiden series and Soldier Blade, Super Star Soldier, Star soilder. Tough to decide between Soldier Series and Raiden series. This is my favorite genre of all time.
Darius Gaiden

Ooh. Good choice. Lords of Thunder still edges it out for me, but Darius Gaiden is a dang good shoot-em up.
My feeling on shooters are they're really unfair. Any one hit kill game is unfair but it especially does not make sense in shooters. You're in a fighter jet/space ship of some kind, how can you not take even the slightest hit? What about in futuristic shooters, which are most, you don't get a shield or anything. I dont mean power ups. You should get a standard health bar.
However I do have 2. Einhander for PS. I loved the mechs, weapons and music so much I had to get it. Pretty rare game. The other is a "3D" one for Genesis, Burning Force. That actually gives you a health bar of 3 hits. Kinda hard to find too.
Hard to choose but I say Ketsui and DoDonpachi DAiOuJou Black Label .

Can't wait for DDP SDOJ next month ;)
Does Panzer Dragoon Orta count? If not, then Einhander.
SonOfChewbacca
I freaking LOVE Panzer Dragoon: Orta. One of the major reasons to own an original XBox. Such an amazing, and artistic game. But no, it's not a shoot-em up. It's an on-rails shooter.
Einhander is an outstanding, choice, IMO. Another all-time favorite of mine. Such a good game with a great sci-fi style to it all.
