It's a tie between Bioshock and Bioshock 2. One, IMO, has the better story, while the other has the better gameplay. I still can't fully decide :?
As to why, the fantastic story, exhilarating gameplay and great audio and visual presentation. I just love every part of both games.
Half-Life.
Superb storytelling with great enemies and weapons, as well as it pioneering the use of scripted sequences and first person storytelling that are the norm in today's First Person Shooters. Also, I hear there were a few mods released for it.... :P
I like military themed shooters that are not walktrough singleplayer (like Call of Duty where you go basically whole the time from point A to point B) and multiplayer (i get angry every time i die without getting a few kills).
So i prefer if a shooter was totally based around a free play , or the free roaming had an important role in it.
There is basically a 3 factors i care the most , none of them are really graphics or storyline related.
1.How much freeplay , do enemies respawn. The most prefable would be a never ending faction warfare , where 2 military factions try to control a different areas on a map , with an AI level of THIS

Never mind the blocks and destruction of an environment , that would make a game look dull after a while.
And a players ability to respawn.Even as a member of an either side.Thought i would like to keep either side stats separate.
2.Statistics and how much of it.I love to see how many kills , what type of kills , with what weapon , basically whole excel sheet full of constantly improving data.
3.Exploration - how open are areas , how many buildings i can enter and how much of each building is explorable.A perfect game has a 100% fully explorable buildings in it , the buildings dont have to be big.But they have to be fully open. Its not a problem if 99% of a buildings are no taller than 2 floors.Sometimes i just love to wonder around in an empty multiplayer server , just looking around in a maps for bitter fun of urban exploration.
I think the closest game to this is Stalker Call of Pripyat , but none of the games are really quiet the thing im looking for.Remember that i do look only for singleplayer experience (or maybe a cooperative gameplay) and i only have PC as a platform.Dont plant to buy any additional ones in a a near future for sure.

BattleforAzerot
Sounds interesting , but im not sure if that game is what im looking for.I dont know anything about game mechanics.About stats , or will you have just one life and so on... It seems that most of the fighting takes on a distance where you can barely even see the enemy.
edit : The Arma 2 is far from what i was suggesting actually.Doesnt sound like the idea i want , though it sounds interesting never the less.
I love the halo universe. Its pretty big and it expands and almost everyone has there own story. I do hope to see more books based on the covenant and the forerunners. I'm no Halo fanboy and I have nothing against the other shooters like half life or cod. I just really dig Halo CE was my first game and I got hooked on it since.
Goldeneye and Halo 2. Goldeneye started a new sub genre of split screen fps gaming. It was very convenient and rewarding that you didn't need to be connected to anything or lug around a bunch of equipment to have a blast. Playing Halo 2 over xbox live with 4 people sitting NEXT to you just can't be touched. I never had the chance to do the same with the current interations of online halo, but there's something better about enjoying the multi fps games with people sitting right next to you--made even more intense when you see you are playing other groups doing the same. This is something most fps games fail to capture these days. Not that they are bad games, but it's like playing Streets of Rage by yourself again.
Either MoH Allied Assault or Halo Combat Evolved. When I played both those games for the first time, my mind was blown.
Half-Life 2. As if ushering in a physics revolution wasn't enough, it was an incredibly atmospheric game with excellent pacing, storytelling, characters and gameplay variety. Nothing even comes close.
- Half Life 2 (including the episodes)
- Half Life
- Deus Ex
- System Shock
- BioShock (haven't played part 2 yet)

This is an excellent list, I agree with it completely.
The Half Life series. Interesting story, well portrayed characters, and the game moves from set piece to set piece with a nice even flow. You'll go from surviving a zombie infested town, to dodging snipers in a train yard, to driving down the coast while fighting through giant bugs and soldier outposts.
I haven't played many. Halo blew me away when I first played it but I wouldn't consider it as my favorite of all-time. Half-Life 2 did a masterful job in creating a huge seamless world and good storytelling. But I don't know if that's my favorite as well. I also loved and enjoyed the first Far Cry but those mutant beasts almost killed the game's enjoyment so that's not my favorite.
I guess I'd have to pick Metroid Prime. Yeah, it can be considered as a first-person adventure but than so is Bioshock. I love the Metroid series and Prime is one of the best games so that's my pick. Although I like the first one the best, Metroid Prime Trilogy makes that a no-brainer, and favorite FPS collection of all-time!
Multiplayer-wise, even though I clocked in tons of hours with World at War and Modern Warfare 1 & 2, I say Day of Defeat is my favorite because it's the first FPS that I played online. It got me into online shooters so I have to shout out to it.
The wild card FPS favorite would have to be Darkwatch. It was overlooked because it's a last-gen game but I just like the concept of a shooter set in a vampire/gothic western setting.
I also enjoy WWII shooters. Metal of Honor Allied Assualt and the first Call of Duty with the expansion pack are my favorites. Much, much better than World at War when it comes to single player experience.
