Uncharted 3 Drake's Deception, obviously.
While most gamers compare it to the likes of Gears Of War, Max Payne 3 and even Vanquish, I don't think that is a fair comparison. Those games focus on one element and get the most out of it in doing so. Uncharted however offers the player a number of choices in many combat situations, affording you the use of hand-to-hand, stealth, cover, gunplay and traversal. Mixing these is very satisfying.
Combat scenarios offer plenty for the player. They have a verticality to them that other games do not. Enemy types range from snipers to slow, heavily armoured enemies which will try to flank the player, faster enemies with shotguns which often run straight for the player to push them out of cover. Enemies throw grenades to push the play out into the open. Taking out specific enemies first can help the player or even give the player more high powered weapons to play with, helping even more. Using stealth can reward the player with more grenades or a small but high powered weapon early.
Naughty Dog has great attention to detail, fire which will change the game space, sand which will react to the player and the player to it, water which can be used to hide the player so they can flank, handholds which will crumble giving the world a sense of age, they are consistent and they are littered with remnants of those who may inhabit the world. These playspaces feel believable, but still translates to great game design, mixing something more tangible with some fantastical.
The sound design surprisingly gets a lot of hate, but is fantastic, great music which suits the gameplay well, often picking up and relaxing when it should. There is a difference between firing in indoor and outdoor environments. Each footstep that Drake takes has a sound, nearly every type of surface has its own unique sound. Run around in the chateau, over broken wood, then on dirt and grass, and then on a carpet, listen to the voices as they echo throughout a big room, listen to the gunfire. This game is a real treat for the ears if you take it as a whole, even the weapon sounds have more kick than ever before in the series.
I could go on and on. I do believe Uncharted 3 to be one of the best games out there and my personal favourite, I also know it's not THE best game and I'd never say it objectively is the greatest game of all time.
