I still to this day, play my Dreamcast.

I think this system came out way before its time, and it was hard for people to grasp all of the awesome ideas Sega had for it. Also, the PS2 coming out only weeks after the Dreamcast relase, and it's ability to play DVDs.

The reason the Dreamcast is still a great console to this day in my opinion, is the awesome collection of games! I have never seen a console with so many original games. To name a few, Power Stone, Marvel VS Capcom 2, Ikaruga, Shinmue, the list goes on. The best part, if you are having a hard time finding these games, no worries! You can just torrent the game, burn it to a regular CD-R and pop it in! No mods or chips needed!

I love you Dreamcast!

Now what's your guy's reason that you love/hate one of the most innovative console ever?

I was still playing mine up to very recently.

It does have a great library of games. The quality ratio must be as high as that of the N64

I just think that sega were too far gone for the dreamcast to rescue them.

Well, I really liked the marketing campaign for it. I live in England so we had the "Dreamcast - up to 6 billion players" adverts which really made me feel like I was a part of a 'Dreamcast community' of sorts. This was only emphasised when people started flocking to the PS2. It made the Dreamcast a kind of niche console.
It was the first of its kind for many reasons. It was the first console to have a proper online system, built-in Anti-aliasing, a motion controller that actually worked (I think it was for Sega Bass Fishing or something like that) and a great variety of games that had an unusually high amount of awesome.
I think you had to be around at the time to really appreciate the Dreamcast, but I shall continue to love it :) Btw, using CD-R's is pretty bad for the already unreliable laser in the DC so I only use original games. My DC is 8 years old now and is still going strong :D

I really wish my Dream machine was still alive and kicking. I love Skies of Arcadia and the Powerstone series, and yet Chu-Chu Rocket kept me oddly addicted, I also loved the quirky little VMU and the different picture messages it displayed whilst you played. When PSO hit the shelves I played that pretty heavily online too and I remember it being my first taste of an MMO, to the Dreamcast, I salute you.

if you ask the Sega fans many will tell you that Sega Saturn (atleast the Japanese console) took the cake for being the best Sega console of all time.

I personally like Dreamcast a bit more than the Saturn because of the awesome fighting games.

Alas, had they just put a DvD drive into the thing, it would have been better received. I didn't get my DC until way after it was "dead". I found one for 19.99 at the PX in Korea (on an army base). I was never a fan of Sega, but I figured I couldn't go wrong for $20.

Man, that system rocked. I was browsing the internet, checking my email, and even running linux on that thing, lol. The game library was awesome, too. Heck, the freaking memory cards were like little gameboys! How awesome is that? heh.

OOPS!! I'm an idiot. I just get really tired of trying to read posts that are terribly written. By the way, I loved my DC. I too got it just before SEGA pulled the plug. I was so pissed. Grandia was my favorite, and NFL 2K.

Sega screwed everyone with the Saturn. No EA support. Bad controller. PS2 hype.= Dead system

PS2 hype seems a bit early when it comes to the Saturn. That console's main problems were its complicated architecture (that made development for it very difficult), stupid marketing decisions (early, unexpected launch with a few games at a select few retailers that infuriated the retailers that didn't get to host the launch, for starters), not bringing many of its best titles outside of Japan, and not sticking to the Japanese rounded gamepad design to start with when releasing the console in Western countries. Sega's push to replace the Saturn with the Dreamcast also irked a lot of Japanese developers who didn't understand why a perfectly fine console in their eyes had to be abandoned so soon (remember, the Saturn did fairly well in Japan, much unlike its performance in the West). Of course, the screwing over goes even farther back to the Genesis/Mega Drive add-ons. The Sega CD is unfortunately more known for the FMV crapware than it was for the games actually worth playing on it, and as if that wasn't enough, they brought out the 32X later. The worst part of all is that the team behind the 32X wasn't aware of another Sega division developing an entirely new console that would be released about six months later, and all those who spent quite a bit to have a fully outfitted Genesis probably felt like they had been slapped in the face when the Saturn suddenly launches half a year later for 400 US$. If Sega only had more business sense back then, we'd probably have a Dreamcast successor by now.

my initial answer is games, but i don't want to say that. because i think the thing that made the dreamcast such a great machine was the fact that it was a complete market failure and now you can get them for uber cheap. the games are a bit pricey, unless you find them at a yard sale or something.

it wasn't as great as it was supposed to be and that's fact. it's complicated GDs weren't nearly as developer friendly as the dvd would some come to be (not to mention they were tiny compared to a dvd). yeah, it had a built in modem, but a 56k modem, if you had a xband for the genesis or snes you had a 56k modem. yeah, you could run linux on it, but who cares? you can run linux on the ps2 also and nobody does that. just because you can do something with something doesn't make it great. you can get a web browser for the ds, but does that make it great? no.

the vmu was cool too, but it was just a one-up to the pocketstation and we all see how it worked out as far as longevity. why play games on your memory card? that's what the console is for, and when you can play 128-bit games at home, a dot matrix game no better than cell phone "snake", or a giga pet/tamagotchi is no substitute.

so it comes back to the games. yep.

Truth. Beleive it or not, the Dreamcast was a very powerful system compaired to the PS2 and even the Gamecube. The only last-gen system that truly topped it was the Xbox.

Example: Ikaruga. On the Dreamcast, it was arcade perfect with no slowdown whatsoever compaired to the original arcade. On the Gamecube however, there was noticable slowdown in certain areas.

Perfect arcade games ports :)

Except for Garou: Mark of the Wolves, some stupid changed music disc tracks for voice tracks. But forgetting about this terrible incident, all Capcom and SNK Playmore games played perfectly here, also we had Dead Or Alive 2 and Soul Calibur 2 for the first time, who wont be amazed.

Sonic games were good back then too
