I think it's little subtle things. Little attentions to detail.

I think the game needs a soul to be great.

A touch from an artist.

The best type of "great game" is the one that comes out of nowhere and surprises a lot of people; which is becoming a rare thing in an age where even the most casual player is connected to the latest news and rumors.

The experience of you in the game and igmoring the real world around you is the true greatness of a game.

Its not the graphics or the gameplay, its how blown away you are and caught up in the game world than yours.

Ultimately, a great game is a game that works on every front. multiplayer and single-player. You don't really need friends while playing games, as that is a rarity for me, and it creates and uncomfortably tense atmosphere at times. A great game is a game that combines every element perfectly, graphics, sound, story, design and most importantly gameplay. Many would say that graphics aren't that big a deal but few would argue that sound is important. Graphics are music for the eyes, so to speak, and always boosts the gaming experience. Ultimately, I have never found multiplayer a factor in the games I play, offline or online.

Well that's expected but look at a game like MGS 2 (I know many people hate it but work with me here). Sure it had all the qualities to make a good game but there many little things that you thought wouldn't be there or were even possible. So many things could be done with the lockers and pictures in them. That game had many things like that.

I think what I was expressing is a great game with a little more than meets the eye. Another example I would use is the Gears of War series. One thing that isn't really pointed out is just how fun the characters are to move with. Whether it be their weight shifting, the roadie run, and slamming into walls.

Flower is another great example. There are all these little touches that make it that much better than just what would have been expected from it.

That's definitely true. I would specifically say extra gameplay modes make good games great. Especially multiplayer of course. I also say a good story makes a game with good but not great gameplay a great game. Of course a game with a bad or non-existent story that has great gameplay is still a great game. It just wouldn't have much of a story. [QUOTE="cooldude1888"]

Ah yes immersion. I love that.
