I just heard of the "rail-shooter" genre today as I found out more about RE: Umbrella Chronicles. Can I ask what makes them so good if you're just shooting enemies? What makes it hard?

If you've ever played Time Crisis or House of the Dead at the arcade you would know. :P

I wish more rail-shooters would actually come to the consoles.

Rails shooters present some of the most satisfying gameplay I typically experience with games. Why? I dunno. The guys above me, especially the immediate two named a couple of my favorites. I also have a deep affinity for old-school rail shooters. Games like Ikaruga and Raiden = Challenging Gameplay Bliss!

Play Time Crisis, one of the best arcade games I ever played (next to DDR of course).

imo rail shooters belong in the arcade, theres nothing like a light gun, with recoil, a pedal you press down for cover, and some bad ass gameplay. i think there should be rail shooters omn consoles, but they need to evolve, a perfect example is Killer7

Try some Time Crisis. Actually aiming at swarms of (what seems to be) fast-acting opponents.

On arcade they fun, for a diversion. But in reality, rail shooters suck. Thats why you don't see them on console, because they are crap compared to a real shooter. Hey look I like Time crisis as much as the next guy, but you have to admit, they just aren't built for it.

It's a game of survival where enemies are thrown towards you. And they only belong in arcades.

But try the following with a friend and see what your missing out on.

Virtua Cop 2,3

Time Crisis 2,3,4

The Lost World.

House of the Dead 4.

Ghost Squad.

Let's go Jungle.

If any are available that is.

And I think they're not that great on consoles is because the feeling of reward is taken out as you now 'own' the game.

You can play it as many times as you want without losing quarters/dollars and they're probably is an unlimited credits setting.

There's nothing quite like the feeling of making a quarter/dollar count for your long fun 30 minute blast.

I love them because they give you a quick adrenaline rush with the frentic gameplay, quick camera shifts, and enemies popping out suddenly sometimes very close to the screen so they are right in your face. Some of my favourites have been Lethal Enforcers, Time Crisis games, and House of the Dead games. I love what I'm seeing for Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and certainly would love to see more games like these come out for the consoles.

Dudes... No one mentions Rayman: Raving Rabbids for the Wii. Best rail shooter moments ever. You get to shoot psychotic bunnies with a plunger gun.

Actually, I think it has more to do with the lightgun itself. It's vastly more satisfying to kill enemies using real aiming skills rather than moving a crosshair around.
