Metal Gear Solid 2 or 3? I've heard that part 3 occurs before parts 1 or 2.

I would say Metal Gear Solid 2 would be good to play first. The order goes 1,2,3,4.

MGS3, MGPO, Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, MGS, MGS2, MGS4.

The ones in bold were the ones you were missing.

This is also in Chronological order.

I am personally playing them in this order:

MGS3

MGS Portable Ops

MGS1

MGS2

MGS4

That seems like the best order

Bad idea to play 3 first, as there will be some spoilers for things that happen in 2. Play them in numerical order, as they're meant to be played.

I'm all for chronological order, but in terms of release dates, each MGS made advances in gameplay that makes the previous installments feel a little bit rusty. They are all great games but I think you should trust the games creators that the best way to appreciate the series is in numerical order.

Chronological order is not anologous to intended playing order. To really understand the series, begin with MGS1 (or even MG1&2, if you're that devoted to it). MGS3 and Portable Ops being played first will RUIN MGS4, and will also make very little sense. So much of the drama within the franchise will be lost. It isn't even a discussion to be had, really. Chronological order in terms of setting is irrelevant.

Did you mean ruin MGS2 there? :P

Indeed, the best way to play the series is to play them in the order that they were released. Metal Gear Solid (and Twin Snakes) has plot summary files that you can read of Metal Gear 1 and 2, so it's not fully necessary to play them, but play 3 after 2, and Portable Ops after 3 (though this game isn't completely necessary to understand 4, there are several hints to the overall story here, plus you see events that are simply implied in other games, such as the formation of FOXHOUND).

3 is a prequel to the entire series, but it was meant to be played after the first two Solid games. Play Metal Gear Solid 2 first, but if you haven't yet find and play the original Metal Gear Solid for PSone before all of them.

Exactly play them in the order they were released, i think u could only play them chronologically if u already finished all the games and ur just having fun with them.

Yes It all Started in MGS3, MGS1,MGS2,MGS4. But played it in there order MGS1,MGS2,MGS3,MGS4. If you start with 3 you will be lost. But if you do it in there order you'll understand all of 3. I highly recommend starting with MGS1 and working on.

Don't play them in chronological order, play them in the original order that they were meant to be played (released). You could play through the whole MGS series without even touching the NES Metal Gear games, because MGS has a whole primer on what happened in those game.

Although MGS3 occurs chronologically before MGS, MGS2 and MGS4. I really do recommend you play it in the order the games were released, i.e,

1

2

3

4

Numerically. The way Kojima wanted it. Remember Kojima released MGS3 to help tie some of the loose ends from previous MGSs.

whys everyone crying about it, play them as THEY are meant too be played, then you'll get the drift of the story easier.

playin them in any other order wil jus confuse u or spoil parts of the story

start with mgs2, mgs1 will jus make ur gamin experience feel diluted seein its ps1.
