What OLD SCHOOL Games Own Today's Games?

Last year, I played Earthbound, or, as it is known in Japan, Mother 2. Until this day, I rate it as in my top 5 games of all time and it comes in at an easy number 1 for RPGs. Sure, I rate Mass Effect 2 and Zelda as top-notch, ball-kicking Action RPGs, but, none even come close to a sniff to Earthbound 2.

Earthbound 2 oozes with an untouchable amount of character and charm that realistic RPG settings just can't compete with. It has unique eccentric characters and odd enemies – for example, a jar of jelly can attack you. On top of all this, the game is encrusted with clever and funny dialogue. Moreover it's poured over with a thick and syrupy mix of catchy 8-bit music.

Seriously, If you haven't played it, you HAVE to. I have played all the greats, from Final Fantasy, Super Mario, Zelda, Halo series etc, and this game owns them all.

Currently playing though Mother 3 and it is just as good.

My question is; what old games do you think are better than today's fancy modern games?

Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World. Then also Final fantasy VI and VII, and Chrono Trigger.

For some reason, I found Chrono Trigger very confusing - I just didn't know what do to half the time or where to go. It was a good game though.

I think some companies know that old school owns, because a lot of games are heading back that way - New Super Mario Bros. Wii etc. Also, this is why DS owns, because the games are mostly old school in design.

I'd probably have to say Super Metroid and the original X-Com.

:shock: :? :| :P :lol: Yes, Earthbound has a lot of high fantasy elements (aliens, robots, time travel and whatnot) and lots of bizarre enemies, but what jrpg doesn't? Also, could you explain how a high fantasy game set in then-modern day America (note the screenshots you provided) is less realistic than a high fantasy game set in some made up land or in the distant future (where like in Star Trek, technology is the equivalent of magic).

If you want to try to sell people on an obscure game few know about, great, but if you can't do it without misrepresenting both the game you are promoting and modern games, why do it?

*Shakes head* Making a list isn't the same thing as making an argument. For example, asteroids was indeed awesome (I poured a lot of time into it) but Super Stardust HD is better across the board. Why is it better? More enemies, asteroids break up more dynamically, bigger asteroids, more weapons, better music, etc (I would have just left it at the screenshots, but posting screenshots isn't exactly an argument either unless one is just discussing graphics).

If you want to wallow in nostalgia and stick to old games, there's nothing wrong with that, but let's try to keep the discussion reality based. I've been gaming for 32 years and enjoyed every bit of it (though not of course, every game) so I've got nothing against old games, I just don't put old games on the same sort of pedestal retro gamers do.

If you're uninterested in legit debate and just want an echo chamber, maybe you and the TC ought to hang out in the Legacy Games forum. I'm sure people misrepresent the truth all the time there without being called on it.

There's lots of old games that still standup compared to new games.

Street Fighter II is still one of the best fighters ever made. That's the first one that comes to mind.

Pretty much all the excellent old school games kick the living crap out of the newer games (unless you are called Super Mario Galaxy 2).
