Last generation's was undoubtedly shooters, which admittedly I enjoyed but I would like to see a new theme this generation. Actually scratch that I wouldn't want to see any genre dominating I would like a plethora of games from different genres to rise and show us why we are gamers and damn proud of it. whos with me?!

People like guns. This will be theme on consoles just as it has always been on PCs. Except for Nintendo. Damn I gotta get me some sweet Bayonetta 2 action. :p

Last gen were shooters?

Well if you talk about last generation consoles then no not really, I wouldn´t say that over a 10 year period that what i will remember is shooters.

They only came in the last leg of the generation and from the looks of most of the new titles on X1 and Ps4 i would say that this generation will be focused for a while on shooters.

@Jacanuk: Last generation consoles and pc alike had an FPS dominated lineup, FACT.

I only hope that it's not dominated by shooters.

I'm hoping for RPG's since the last generation barely had any for that genre! That said it does appear that kickstarter is proving to be quite useful in helping developers churn out a number of RPG titles this year. The great drought might be ending 0,0

@pupp3t_mast3r: Plenty of great RPGs on handhelds since the GBA days.

That's just it, they're all hand helds RPG's. You've got to admit that while they're good they don't match up to the golden age of RPG's i.e. PSone and PS2. I still remember spending hundreds of hours in front of those consoles with Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei games.

RPG definitely, I'd like to see some more action adventure puzzle games, simulators(driving, space), nature/photography(Afrika Aqua Vita)...

@pupp3t_mast3r: I'll have to respectfully disagree. I find handheld RPGS to be consistently awesome, especially ones from the likes of Atlus.

Plus, so what if they don't match up to the Golden Era? They still stand well enough on their own to be worth playing. IMO, at least :P

I actually didn't get into RPGs til maybe three years ago (I played a few but I didn't like them like I do now) so I don't have too much nostalgia for older RPGs. That beign said, I still enjoy them a lot.

I was thinking something along the lines of ... "Freeze, this is a stick-up! Put all your money in the bag!"

Uncharted style cinematic 3rd person action adventure games I'm guessing.

The Order 1866 is even in 21:9 ffs

@ barrybarryk

Why do People think Uncharted and TLOU are action adventure games ?

They were shooters with a Puzzle or two to solve, or is the word "Adventure" being used in a more figurative way.

I think Boobs will be a great theme for the 8th Generation. Its time to retire the Sausage Fest of Old.

The 'theme' this generation? More games will probably have online elements built in (like Watch Dogs) and micro-transactions (all the 'free to play' games).

Other that that, I'm happy with the diversity of games I'm seeing so far, including more open world games. I just hope it doesn't become shooter heavy like last gen as time goes on.

@Lulu_Lulu: Having a gun doesn't magically make them not action-adventure titles. If you want to throw the word shooter in there too go right on ahead. I'm content with just calling them 3rd person action-adventure titles.

Almost anything would be better than last gen imo. Worst gen I've been apart of(Snes-Today, was part of the Nes gen, but was very young).

Last gen lacked majorly in good Jrpg's(Xenoblade(and X is pretty much the only reason I own a Wii-U(I like it so far by the way)), The Last Story, and Lost Odyssey were simply phenomenal though).

I'm hoping, and I think there is a good chance that RPG's are going to be a major part of this gen.

@ barrybarryk

it goes both ways, having two puzzles and jumping onto ledges doesn't make it Action-Adventure.

@Lulu_Lulu: And not just lifeless digital boobs either, they need to be just as realistic as facial expression.

Yeah it does seem this way, and quite frankly I'm not sure if I would consider it a good thing. They are going to put too much time into making the games open world, and not enough into making the gameplay, story, etc good. I'm not worried about games like The Witcher, and Metal Gear(because Kojima is a perfectionist), but for less skilled, and/or rushed(by publishers) developers I think we are going to see an extreme decline in quality if this(focus on open world) is the case.

It may be that I personally played too many open world games but I think they'll be ok and I certainly hope they don't dominate. It seems like the more they evolve, the bigger the maps get. I HATE big maps, even if the game makes it easy to navigate between certain points. That's just me though, I just think open world games will never die out and we got a healthy amount of them last gen(or in my case unhealthy).
