I hope it would be the Mario series. After all, they (and Nintendo) did save the entire industry.

Mario, and Zelda. Although i prefer Zelda, Mario is more influential, and i don't think any game series has covered more genres than Mario has

Either Mario or Zelda. It couldn't be anything else, as few other games have had the influence of those two.

Well, there's a ton of great series' out there, Castlevania, Final Fantasy, Metroid, Zelda, Xenogears/saga, Guitar Hero, and many others. But I believe that Mario will be the one that's considered the greatest of all time. Most of them were great, and Super Mario Brothers saved the industry too.

I really hope Sonic is remembered. Not the horrible 3d versions, but the original sidescrolling ones. Never has a platform game captured the speed and sheer fun of hurtling down a hill, round a loop the loop and bouncing into the sky thanks to a nicely placed spring.

I would be most happy if Final Fantasy left the greatest legacy, but, I know that Mario is going to be the one most people remember as the greatest series.

I was going to say both Mario and FF. But honestly, any series that started on NES and is still around today deserves a lot of credit. And there are several.

Mario of course gets the recognition. But to me, Street Fighter started a new age revolution of sheer one on one competition, not just high scoring but straight up competing against someone else directly. What other game had such a draw back in the 90's, still being played in tournaments to this day and....single handedly gave the victory to the SNES over the Genesis thanks to it's mere existence for that system alone...?
